Do You Need a LinkedIn to Apply for Jobs? 685 of 3,826 AI Job Forms Required One (Oct. 21, 2026)

Usually not, at the AI companies we track: on October 21, 2026, we opened 3,826 application forms on 19 AI company job boards and 685 of them, 17.9%, required a LinkedIn link. Another 2,277 asked for one as optional and 864 had no LinkedIn box at all. But two employers, Sierra and Cognition, required it on every form we read.

That is the form, not the job ad and not the hiring decision. We read the boxes an applicant has to fill in, one field at a time, on the employer’s own application page. If you are about to send your first application and have no profile yet, this tells you where a missing LinkedIn stops you at the form and where it does not.

What we opened on October 21, 2026

  • 3,826 open jobs on the 19 boards behind our AI jobs tracker: OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Scale AI, Mercor, Perplexity, Cohere, Sierra, ElevenLabs, Cursor, Cognition, Replit, Figure AI, Apptronik, Agility Robotics, 1X, Physical Intelligence, Waymo and Nuro.
  • For each job we pulled the application form from the employer’s public Greenhouse or Ashby feed and kept every question label and its “required” flag. All 3,826 forms were read; none failed.
  • A form counts when a question label contains “LinkedIn.” We read every matched label by eye. Two Physical Intelligence boxes accept “Website/LinkedIn/Github,” so a LinkedIn link alone was required on 683 forms.
  • We did not submit any application or contact any employer, so we have not tested what a form does when a required box is left empty.

Do you need a LinkedIn to apply for jobs at AI companies?

Not on most forms: 3,141 of the 3,826 AI job application forms we opened on October 21, 2026, 82.1%, let you apply without a LinkedIn link. That covers the 2,277 forms where the box was optional and the 864 where there was no box. Only 685 forms, 17.9%, marked LinkedIn as required.

The split is by employer, not by job. At OpenAI, 661 of 808 forms had no LinkedIn question; those forms ask for a resume, location and start date, with no profile or website box at all. Perplexity had a LinkedIn box on 1 of 134 forms. Five boards, 1X, Agility Robotics, Nuro, Replit and Perplexity, required it on none.

Which AI companies require a LinkedIn profile on the application?

Sierra required a LinkedIn link on all 189 forms and Cognition on all 105 we opened on October 21, 2026; ElevenLabs required it on 136 of 156 and Mercor on 93 of 111. Those four employers account for 523 of the 685 required boxes, 76%. Nobody else passed 25%.

The surprise was at Sierra. On 183 of its 189 forms, the resume upload was optional while the LinkedIn box was required. In other words, Sierra’s forms will take an application with no resume file but not one with no LinkedIn link. Its six forms that required both included the Software Engineer, Agent (New Grad 2027) job in San Francisco, listed at $150,000 to $180,000.

Employer Forms read LinkedIn box Resume upload
Sierra 189 Required on 189 Optional on 183
Cognition 105 Required on 105 Required on 105
ElevenLabs 156 Required on 136, optional on 16 Required on 155
Mercor 111 Required on 93, optional on 18 Required on 111
Anthropic 676 Required on 36, optional on 630 Optional on 440
xAI 302 Required on 2, optional on 297 Required on 272
OpenAI 808 Required on 21, no box on 661 Required on 808
Perplexity 134 No box on 133 Required on 134

Can you apply to Anthropic or xAI without a LinkedIn profile?

Yes, on almost every form: Anthropic made LinkedIn optional on 630 of 676 forms and xAI on 297 of 302 on October 21, 2026, and both attach a written note to the box. Apart from one Scale AI line, these are the only instructions we found next to a LinkedIn box across all 3,826 forms.

Anthropic’s note, on 616 forms, reads: “Please ensure to provide either your LinkedIn profile or Resume, we require at least one of the two.” On 440 of its forms the resume is optional too, so the note is what tells you one of the two is expected. A resume alone meets the stated rule.

There is one wrinkle. On 16 Anthropic forms, the LinkedIn box carries that same “either one” note but is also flagged required. We cannot tell from the feed which rule the form enforces, and we did not test it. On those 16, the safe read is to fill in both.

xAI’s note, on 51 forms, reads: “If you have a public LinkedIn profile, please provide its URL.” That wording assumes some applicants have none. A Scale AI form went the other way: “Please make sure your linkedin is on your resume!”

Do internships and new-grad jobs require LinkedIn more often?

Slightly: 41 of 201 entry-level and internship forms required a LinkedIn link on October 21, 2026, 20.4%, against 644 of the other 3,625 forms, 17.8%. The gap is small. Where you apply matters far more than how senior the job is.

Most of those 41 sit at a few employers. Sierra had seven new-grad and intern forms, all required. 12 of Waymo’s 13 required boxes were on 2027 summer internships, while its other 352 forms kept LinkedIn optional. Figure AI required it on 10 intern and technician forms in San Jose, including a Robot Service Technician job.

“Entry-level” here is the tracker’s label from words in the job title, such as intern, new grad, fellow, junior and technician. It is our classification, not the employer’s. For the jobs themselves, see entry-level AI jobs with no experience and when summer 2027 internships open.

Should you make a LinkedIn profile before your first application?

If you plan to apply at Sierra, Cognition, ElevenLabs or Mercor, you will meet a required LinkedIn box on most of their forms, so by our October 21, 2026 count a basic profile is the practical step. On the other 15 boards, a required LinkedIn box appeared on 162 of 3,265 forms, about 5%.

We are not career coaches, and no form we read explains how a LinkedIn link is used once it is submitted. So these are the decision points the forms themselves give you, not a promise about hiring:

  1. Open the form before you build anything. The required star is on the employer’s own page. Our AI jobs board lets you browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site.
  2. Match the profile to the resume. Scale AI’s note asks for the link on the resume itself. Same job titles and dates in both places.
  3. Do not invent a link. If a box is optional and you have no profile, leave it blank rather than pasting a placeholder.
  4. Use the other link boxes. Sierra also requires “GitHub or personal website” on its new-grad form; Perplexity requires an exercise link on 119 forms.

Resume basics come up in whether to put ChatGPT on your resume and whether you need a cover letter, which we counted on these same forms.

We are not recruiters. We take no money from employers, and postings can close at any time; the employer’s official page wins. Never pay to apply, never deposit a check and send money back, a text message is not a job offer, and apply only on the employer’s own site. More at the Jobs Desk sources.

GPA, salary and self-ID: the other form boxes we opened

All 3,826 jobs open on October 21, 2026 are on our AI jobs board, and the daily AI jobs tracker counts them by company. Each listing links to the employer’s own page.

Other form questions we have opened: whether applications ask for GPA, the voluntary self-identification section, the desired salary box and the “why do you want to work here” question.

Screening and timing: whether you can opt out of AI resume screening, applying to several jobs at one company, why entry-level jobs ask for experience and job alerts for specific companies.

Company reads cover Anthropic, OpenAI and how to get a job at OpenAI or Anthropic. Intern pay is in how much software engineering interns make.

We will reopen Sierra’s forms on November 18, 2026 and report whether the resume is still optional while LinkedIn is required. Stuck on a form question? Ask the Jobs Desk, or start at the Jobs Desk hub.

Do you need LinkedIn to get a job?

To apply, usually not at the AI companies we track. On October 21, 2026, 685 of 3,826 application forms on 19 boards required a LinkedIn link. The forms do not say how a profile affects the hiring decision after you apply.

Is LinkedIn required for job applications?

On 17.9% of the forms we read on October 21, 2026. Sierra and Cognition required it on every form, ElevenLabs on 136 of 156 and Mercor on 93 of 111. Five boards, including Perplexity, required it on none.

Can I apply without a LinkedIn if the box is optional?

Yes. An optional box can be left blank. On 616 Anthropic forms, the note says you must give either a LinkedIn profile or a resume, so a resume alone meets that rule.

What if a required LinkedIn box blocks me?

On October 21, 2026, the box was required on most Sierra, Cognition, ElevenLabs and Mercor forms, and we found no instruction offering another way to fill it. A basic profile that matches your resume is the plain fix. Do not paste a fake link.

Do internships ask for LinkedIn?

About as often as other jobs. On October 21, 2026, 41 of 201 entry-level and internship forms on 19 AI company boards required a LinkedIn link, 20.4%, against 17.8% of all other forms.
