Can You Apply to Multiple Jobs at the Same Company? We Read 3,861 AI Job Postings and None Sets a Hard Limit (Oct. 3, 2026)
Yes: on October 3, 2026 we read all 3,861 open postings on 19 AI employers’ job boards, and not one of them sets a hard limit on how many roles you can apply to at the same company. Only 50 postings, at 6 employers, say anything about applying to more than one role. The firmest line is Waymo’s: its 2027 summer internship postings ask you to apply to your “top 3.”
What we read on October 3, 2026
We pulled the full text of every open posting on the public job boards of the 19 AI, robotics and self-driving employers we follow on our AI jobs tracker. We searched every sentence for language about applying to several roles, one application covering many jobs, or reapplying. Then we read each matching sentence ourselves and threw out the false hits.
- 3,861 postings read on 19 boards. The Google DeepMind US board returned an error (404), so it is not in the count.
- 50 postings (1.3%) at 6 employers mention applying to more than one role. 13 boards say nothing about it in any posting.
- 45 of those 50 are Waymo internship postings that ask for your “top 3.”
- 369 postings share an exact job title with another posting at the same company. In 352 of them, every copy names a different city.
- Anthropic’s careers page says you can re-apply after 12 months. OpenAI’s interview guide sets no number.

Can you apply to multiple jobs at the same company in AI right now?
Yes: of the 3,861 postings we read on October 3, 2026 at 19 AI employers, none says you may apply to only one role, and none gives a number you are not allowed to go past. Most say nothing at all. Thirteen of the 19 boards, including xAI, Scale AI, Figure AI and Nuro, have no sentence about it in any posting.
The six employers that do mention it say four different things. Read them before you send a second application, because two of them change what a second application means.
| Employer | What the posting says | Postings that say it |
|---|---|---|
| Waymo | Apply to each role separately, and to your top 3 | 45 of 366 |
| Perplexity | One application is considered across the infrastructure group | 1 of 127 |
| OpenAI | A shared hiring process places you across several openings | 1 of 830 |
| Mercor | One link covers three levels; they pick the level | 1 of 114 |
| Cognition | One posting covers openings on three teams | 1 of 103 |
| Anthropic | Reapply to an always-open role about once a year | 1 of 641 |
The other 13 boards are xAI, Sierra, Scale AI, ElevenLabs, Cohere, Cursor, Nuro, Figure AI, 1X, Apptronik, Agility Robotics, Replit and Physical Intelligence. Silence is not permission to send 30 applications, but it is not a ban either. For who is hiring most this week, see which AI companies are hiring right now.
How many Waymo internships can you apply to at once?
Waymo asks for three: 45 of its 47 internship postings read on October 3, 2026 say to apply to each role individually and to “the top 3 roles you are interested in.” None of Waymo’s other 319 postings carries that line, so it reads as an internship rule, not a company-wide one.
The full sentence, from the 2027 Summer Intern, BS, Depot Automation posting: “To be in consideration for multiple roles, you will need to apply to each one individually – please apply to the top 3 roles you are interested in.” Two things follow. One application does not put you in the running for other intern roles. And the “please” makes it a request, not a hard limit; the posting does not say what happens to a fourth application.
Our read, not Waymo’s wording: if you send a fourth anyway, you are betting the recruiter will not mind. With three slots, rank the roles by how many of the “required” lines you meet, not by team prestige. For when these programs open, see when summer 2027 internships open, and for what they pay, how much software engineering interns make.

When does one application count for several jobs?
At four employers we read on October 3, 2026, one posting is written to cover several openings: Perplexity, OpenAI, Mercor and Cognition each have one posting that does this. If you apply there, a second application to a matching role may be redundant.
Perplexity’s general infrastructure engineer posting is the clearest. It tells you to apply directly to a specialized role if one clearly matches you, and otherwise to apply to the general posting: “Submit one application, and we will consider you across the Infrastructure organization.” OpenAI’s Member of Executive Operations posting calls itself “a shared hiring process,” in which the company considers candidates “across multiple opportunities.”
Mercor’s Strategic Projects Lead posting says it is hiring associates, leads and senior leads, and will evaluate you “for the role that best fits your level of experience.” Cognition’s Data Engineer posting says there are “multiple openings across various teams: GTM, Core Product, and Finance.” In both, choosing the level or team is the employer’s job, not yours.

Why does the same job title show up five or eight times on one board?
Because each city usually gets its own posting: on October 3, 2026, 369 postings on these 19 boards shared an exact title with another posting at the same company, and in 352 of them every copy named a different location. Sierra’s Software Engineer, Agent appears 8 times, from London to South Korea. OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineer, Codex appears 7 times.
One pattern stood out in the four groups we charted: pay appeared only on U.S. copies. Sierra’s San Francisco copy lists $180,000 to $390,000; its seven other copies list none. OpenAI’s San Francisco Codex copy lists $211,000 to $278,000, and its San Francisco Account Director, Large Enterprise copy lists $189,000 to $240,000. Anthropic’s five Applied AI Architect copies are all in Asia or Australia, and none shows pay. For why that happens, see why job postings do not show salary.

So applying to two copies of the same title is applying for two different jobs in two places. Our suggestion: apply to the copy for the city where you can legally work and would really move. A second copy in a city you would turn down only adds a file someone has to close. If you are open to remote work, check what each copy means by it first: what hybrid means in a job posting.
How soon can you reapply to the same company after a rejection?
At Anthropic, after 12 months: its careers page, read on October 3, 2026, says you are “welcome to re-apply after 12 months, or sooner if something materially changes about your experience or skills.” One always-open Anthropic research posting says the same thing in its own words: “we suggest only reapplying once per year.”
That same posting adds a detail worth knowing. When a team also posts its own version of the job, “the teams will give preference to candidates who apply to the team-specific postings.” So at Anthropic, the general posting and the team posting are not the same door. More on this employer in is Anthropic hiring.
OpenAI’s interview guide, read on October 3, 2026, sets no number. It says: “Submit your application to positions that interest you,” and that the recruiting team typically takes one week to review a resume and email back. It does not mention a waiting period after a rejection. See is OpenAI still hiring for what it is posting now.

Does applying to several roles at one company hurt your chances?
We cannot measure that, and none of the 3,861 postings or the two careers pages we read on October 3, 2026 says it does. None says it helps, either. Recruiter opinions on forums go both ways, and we did not test them.
What the pages do show is where a second application adds nothing. It adds nothing on a pooled posting like Perplexity’s, and nothing for a city you would decline. Past Waymo’s top three, our guess is that it costs you goodwill. Everywhere else, the honest limit is your time. Each application to a different role should read like it was written for that role. If a posting asks for a cover letter, see what we found in do I need a cover letter.
One more practical point: a screening tool may read each application on its own. Whether that tool is AI, and whether you can opt out, is covered in can you opt out of AI resume screening.
How should you choose which roles to apply to at one company?
Start from the posting text: on October 3, 2026, all 50 instructions we found sat inside postings, and only one rule, Anthropic’s 12-month re-apply line, also sat on a careers page. Here is the order we would use, built from what the postings said:
- Look for a pooling line. If the posting says one application covers a group, as Perplexity’s and OpenAI’s do, apply once there and stop.
- Look for a number. If it gives one, like Waymo’s top 3 for interns, stay inside it.
- Pick one city per title. Same title in five cities means five jobs; apply to the one you would take.
- Keep only roles where you meet the required lines. This is our suggestion, not an employer rule. It keeps two or three strong applications ahead of ten thin ones.
- Write down the date. If you are turned down at Anthropic, its page points to 12 months before re-applying.
To hear about new roles without checking every day, set up job alerts for specific companies. And before applying to a role that has been up for months, read should you apply to old job postings.

What the recruiter sees when you apply twice
Should you apply to two jobs at the same company at the same time?
You can. None of the 3,861 postings we read on October 3, 2026 forbids it. Check first whether one posting already covers both roles, as at Perplexity, OpenAI, Mercor and Cognition.
Can you apply to two different positions at the same company if they are in different departments?
Yes, at every employer we read. Only Waymo’s internship postings tie this to a number, the top 3, and say each role needs its own application.
Will the recruiter see all of my applications?
The postings do not say. Many of these employers use one applicant system for the whole board, so it is safest to assume each application can be seen side by side. That is an inference, not something a posting stated.
Do I need a different resume for each role?
None of the postings requires it. Our suggestion is to adjust the top third of the resume to each role’s required lines, since that is what each posting lists separately.
What if I applied to the wrong copy of a job title?
Apply to the right city’s copy; each one is its own posting. The postings do not describe a way to move an application, so ask the recruiter if you reach one.
Before you apply anywhere
We are not recruiters, we take no money from employers, and postings can close at any time: the official page wins. A real employer never asks you to pay to apply, deposit a check and send money back, or accept an offer by text. Apply only on the employer’s own domain. More on spotting job scams.

How we counted: we read the full text of every posting through each board’s public Greenhouse or Ashby API on October 3, 2026, ran two sentence searches for wording about multiple applications, pooled postings and reapplying, and read every match by eye. A sentence worded in a way neither search caught could exist; we did not read all 3,861 postings line by line.
