What Does Hybrid Mean in a Job Posting? 563 of 1,381 AI Job Ads Never Say How Many Days (Oct. 1, 2026)
On October 1, 2026, we read 1,381 US job postings that AI companies label hybrid, and 563 of them, 41%, never say how many days a week you would be in the office. Where a posting does write a day count, the answer is almost always three: 307 of the 346 postings with a number say 3 days, or at least 3. Hybrid means you split the week between the employer’s office and home. The split is the part many postings leave out.
What we read on October 1, 2026
We pulled the full text of every US posting on the public Greenhouse and Ashby job boards of 19 AI, robotics and autonomy employers, the same boards behind our AI jobs tracker. We counted a posting as hybrid when the board’s own workplace field said Hybrid or the text called the job hybrid. Then we read every sentence that put a number on the office time.
- 3,002 US postings read; 1,381 are hybrid.
- 563 hybrid postings name no office days, no weekdays and no share of time.
- 472 say only “at least 25% of the time” (all Anthropic).
- 346 give a day count; 307 of those say 3 days or at least 3.
- 5 carry the hybrid label and still ask for 5 days in the office.

What does hybrid mean in a job posting?
In a job posting, hybrid means the employer expects you in its office on some days and lets you work from home on the others; across 1,381 hybrid AI postings we read on October 1, 2026, the most common written split was 3 office days a week. It is the middle option between on-site, which means every workday in the office, and remote, which means none.
What hybrid does not tell you is the number. The word covers OpenAI’s three fixed days, Anthropic’s “at least 25% of the time,” and Replit’s Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It also covers five postings that ask for all five days. A hybrid label is a category, not a schedule.
It usually also means you live near an office. Most of these postings name a city, and the office days assume you can get there. A hybrid job in San Francisco is not a remote job you can do from Ohio. For that, see our count of AI companies hiring remote workers.
How many days a week is hybrid at AI companies?
Three days is the usual written answer: of the 346 hybrid postings that state a day count on October 1, 2026, 307 say 3 days or at least 3, 21 say 4, 13 say 2 or 2 to 3, and 5 say 5. But one company drives the total. OpenAI wrote 248 of those 307 three-day postings.
OpenAI’s standard line, word for word in 147 postings we read on October 1, 2026, is: “We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.” Some OpenAI postings name the days. Eight say “an in office requirement from Monday – Wednesday,” and others add “the option to work from home on Thursdays and Fridays.”
The 4-day postings cluster in hardware. OpenAI’s consumer-devices and robotics roles, such as its Firmware Engineer, RTOS, say “four days in the office per week.” ElevenLabs’ IT Support posting says “4 days per week on-site and one day working from home.” Our read, not the employers’ stated reason: hands-on hardware work pulls people in.
The 2-day answers are rarer. Seven Anthropic marketing and campaign postings ask for “at least 2 days a week.” Perplexity’s two strategic finance leads say “in-person attendance 2-3 days per week.” Replit’s weekend support engineers work Saturday through Wednesday, “with an in-office requirement on Mondays and Wednesdays.”

Which AI companies say how many days, and which leave it out?
Anthropic puts a number on all 498 of its US postings and OpenAI on 268 of its 482 hybrid postings, while Waymo calls 230 postings hybrid and states a day count in exactly one. Smaller employers mostly say nothing. Cohere, Apptronik, Cursor, Cognition and Scale AI had 23 hybrid postings between them and no numbers.
| Employer | Hybrid postings | State a number | What the posting says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | 498 | 498 | “at least 25% of the time”; 26 roles add their own days |
| OpenAI | 482 | 268 | “3 days in the office per week”; 18 say four |
| Waymo | 230 | 1 | “In this hybrid role”; one says “at least 3 fixed days” |
| Replit | 65 | 42 | “Monday, Wednesday, and Friday” |
| Perplexity | 46 | 3 | Mostly the board’s Hybrid field and nothing else |
| Agility Robotics | 36 | 5 | “3+ days/week on site” in a few; most name a city only |
OpenAI’s 214 silent postings are silent in a specific way. In 206 of them, the word hybrid appears only in the board’s workplace field at the top of the page, not anywhere in the job description. If you skim past that field, nothing in the text tells you the job is hybrid at all.
Waymo is the reverse. The text says hybrid but, in 229 of 230 postings, never how much. Its 2027 summer intern postings, 38 of them, say “Note: This will be a hybrid onsite internship position.” Our Waymo hiring guide and intern pay count cover those roles.

What does #LI-Hybrid mean in a job posting?
#LI-Hybrid is a LinkedIn tag that employers paste into a job description so LinkedIn files the job as hybrid; LinkedIn’s Recruiter help page, read on October 1, 2026, tells employers to “Specify the workplace by adding the tag #LI-Remote, #LI-Hybrid, #LI-Onsite to the job description.” It is a filing label, not a schedule.
We found the tag at the bottom of 20 Waymo postings on October 1, 2026, none of which stated a day count. So the tag tells LinkedIn the job is hybrid and still tells you nothing about how many days. Treat it the same way you treat the word itself: a reason to ask, not an answer.
Can a hybrid job turn out to be five days in the office?
Yes: 5 of the 1,381 hybrid postings we read on October 1, 2026 ask for five office days in their own text, three at Anthropic and two at OpenAI. Anthropic’s AV Operations and AV Production Specialist postings carry the company’s hybrid policy line and then say “This role is expected to be in office 5 days per week.”
The role-specific line is the one that counts. At Anthropic, 26 postings add their own rule below the 25% default, from “at least 2 days a week” to five. Our earlier read of what remote-friendly means at Anthropic found the same layering.
Seven of the 19 boards had no hybrid postings at all: xAI, Mercor, Sierra, Figure AI, 1X, Physical Intelligence and Nuro. Mercor writes “We work in-person five days a week” into 110 postings. Figure AI says “5 days/week in-office collaboration” in 44. In all, 183 US postings we read require five days in the office or in person; we left out one Sierra posting that says “up to five days.”
So the honest summary of AI hiring this week is not “hybrid is normal.” It is that the two biggest boards in our count, OpenAI and Anthropic, are hybrid, while several robot makers and fast-growing startups write five days into their postings, and our Figure AI and xAI Memphis reads match that.

What does “at least 25% of the time” mean in days?
At least 25% of a five-day week works out to 1.25 days, which in practice means you plan for two office days in most weeks; that is our arithmetic, not Anthropic’s wording. The line, read on October 1, 2026 in all 498 Anthropic US postings, says: “Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time.”
Two words in it matter. “Currently” says the policy can change. “One of our offices” means any Anthropic office, not a specific team’s, which matters if you live near New York or Seattle. Our Anthropic hiring guide lists where its US offices are.
How many office days a year does each hybrid schedule add up to?
At 48 working weeks a year, a 3-day hybrid job means about 144 office days, a 4-day job 192, and a fully on-site job 240. That 48-week figure is our assumption to allow for holidays and leave; none of the postings state one. The gap between 3 and 4 days is 48 extra commutes a year.
| What the posting says | Office days a year | Round trips a year |
|---|---|---|
| At least 25% of the time | 60 or more | 60 or more |
| 2 days a week | 96 | 96 |
| 3 days a week | 144 | 144 |
| 4 days a week | 192 | 192 |
| 5 days (on-site) | 240 | 240 |
Put your own commute cost next to that column. If a round trip costs you $20 in fares or gas, the difference between a 3-day and a 4-day job is 48 trips, or $960 a year. That is only the difference between two schedules, not what either one costs you in total.
How do you find out the real schedule before you apply?
Search the posting text for “days,” “week,” “office” and weekday names, then ask at the first recruiter call if nothing turns up; that is how we found the office requirement in the 818 hybrid postings that state one. Here is the order that worked for us on October 1, 2026.
- Read the workplace field at the top. On Ashby boards, such as OpenAI’s and Perplexity’s, it may be the only place hybrid appears.
- Press Ctrl+F (Command+F on a Mac) and search “days,” then “office,” then “Monday.” At OpenAI the day count usually sits in the same sentence as the relocation offer.
- Look for a role-specific line. At Anthropic it starts “Role-specific policy” and overrides the 25% default.
- Ask before the interviews start. The recruiter screen is the cheapest place to find out.
- Get it in writing. Ask whether the office expectation appears in the offer letter.
The posting says hybrid. How many days a week is this team in the office, and are they fixed days? Is that written into the offer?
Two questions, one call. If the answer is vague, that is information too. If you are setting alerts for these companies, our guide to job alerts for specific companies shows how. Our post on why postings hide salary covers the other number they leave out.

Is a remote job with an option to go hybrid the same thing?
No: Agility Robotics had 22 US postings on October 1, 2026 that say “This is a fully remote role with the option to work hybrid,” and we counted those as remote, not hybrid. The office is optional there. In a hybrid job, the office days are the requirement.
One Cohere posting goes further and says “there is no minimum in-office qualification requirement.” That is the clearest remote-friendly wording we saw all day. For the full remote picture, see whether AI engineer jobs are remote and part-time AI jobs you can do from home.
Twenty job-board APIs, one error from Google DeepMind
We read the public Greenhouse and Ashby job-board APIs of 20 tracked employers on October 1, 2026. Google DeepMind’s US board returned an error, so it is not in this count: unread, not zero. We dropped postings located outside the US, including Belgrade, London, Toronto and the Middle East.
A posting counted as hybrid when the board’s workplace field said Hybrid, the location line said Hybrid, or the text used hybrid about the work arrangement. “Hybrid cloud” and “a hybrid of customer and product” did not count. We then searched every hybrid posting’s full text for day counts, weekday names and percentages, and read each match.
Our first pass missed a handful of day counts written across bullet points, including Waymo’s one. We re-read all the postings marked “no number” and corrected the count before publishing. Postings change daily; the employer’s own page wins.
Before you apply anywhere
We are not recruiters, we take no money from employers, and postings can close at any time: the official page wins. A real employer never asks you to pay to apply, deposit a check and send money back, or accept an offer by text. Apply only on the employer’s own domain. More on spotting job scams.
OpenAI and Anthropic, the two labs that lean hybrid
Browse every open role on our jobs board and apply on the employer’s site, or see today’s counts on the AI jobs tracker. For the two hybrid-heavy labs, read is OpenAI still hiring and is Anthropic hiring. For a wider view, start with which AI companies are hiring right now.
