What Does It Mean When a Job Posting Is Taken Down? We Watched 280 AI Postings Come Down in One Week (Oct. 5, 2026)

It means the employer closed that link, and the page will not tell you why: between September 28 and October 5, 2026, 280 postings came down on the 19 AI job boards we track, and none of the pages we could open gave a reason. 13 of the 280 came back within the week under the same title with a brand-new link. The total barely moved, from 3,858 open roles to 3,853.

What we checked between September 28 and October 5, 2026

Every day we read the public job boards of 19 AI, robotics and self-driving employers through the same Greenhouse and Ashby systems their own careers pages use. This is the data behind our AI jobs tracker. For this report we compared the Monday, September 28 reading with the Monday, October 5 reading, link by link.

  • 280 postings were open on September 28 and gone on October 5. 275 links were new.
  • 13 of the 280 reappeared at the same company with the same title and a new link. 9 of those also kept the same location.
  • On October 5 we opened all 280 dead links. 238 showed a closed or not-found result. 25 sent us to the company’s own careers pages. 17 (Waymo) answered with a bot check, so we could not read them.
  • The Google DeepMind US board returned an error on both dates and is not in any count here.

Written and checked by Prof. H. An AI assistant helped draft this piece and run the page reads; every count comes from the board readings on the dates shown.

Diverging bar chart for the week of October 5, 2026 across 19 AI job boards. Left bars show postings taken down, right bars show new links. xAI net plus 25, Anthropic plus 16, Agility Robotics plus 10, OpenAI minus 2 with 62 removed and 60 added, ElevenLabs minus 32 with 47 removed.
Coral bars are postings that came down during the week; green bars are links we had not seen on September 28. OpenAI removed 62 and added 60, so its net change was only 2.

What does it mean when a job posting is taken down?

It means the employer turned that one link off, and on the 248 removed links whose landing page we could see on October 5, 2026, the page never said whether the job was filled, paused or rewritten. Ashby boards showed a plain “Job not found.” Greenhouse boards bounced us to the full job list with a short red notice that the job had closed.

That is the honest answer to the question people type into search. A removed posting is a closed link, not a message. The forum answers on page one of Google list possible reasons, and every one of those reasons is a guess from outside the company.

What we can add is scale. In one ordinary week, 280 postings came down on 19 boards and 275 went up. On a board you are watching, a vanished posting is a routine event, not a signal aimed at you.

Our screenshot of a removed OpenAI posting (IT Controls Data Engineer), opened October 5, 2026. This is everything the page says: no reason, no date, no contact.

Removed AI postings showed three different screens on October 5

Of the 280 dead links we opened on October 5, 2026, 156 showed “Job not found,” 82 redirected to the full board with a closed notice, 25 went to a company careers page and 17 could not be read. Which one you see depends on the software the employer uses, not on why the job closed.

Four boxes describing what happened when 280 removed job links were opened on October 5, 2026: 156 on Ashby showed a Job not found page, 82 on Greenhouse redirected to the full list with a red closed banner, 25 went to company careers pages, and 17 Waymo links returned a bot check and were not read.
The four outcomes, with the boards in each. The note at the bottom is the main finding: none of the readable pages gave a reason.
What the link did Boards Links
“Job not found” page OpenAI 62, ElevenLabs 47, Cohere 14, Sierra 13, 7 others 20 156
Full list plus a closed notice Anthropic 46, Scale AI 18, Figure AI 9, xAI 9 82
Company careers page Nuro 8, Waymo 7, Agility Robotics 5, Apptronik 5 25
Bot check, not read Waymo 17

The Agility Robotics links are the sneakiest. In our browser on October 5, a removed Agility posting loaded the company’s full list of 79 jobs with no notice at all. If you clicked an old link from an email, you could think you were on the right page.

The 25 company-page links need care. We confirmed Agility’s list and Apptronik’s general listings page. For the 8 Nuro and 7 Waymo redirects, we did not read the final page, so we do not describe it.

If a job posting is taken down, is the position filled?

Not necessarily: in the week to October 5, 2026, 13 of 280 removed AI postings came back at the same company under the same title, so at least those 13 were still hiring. A filled job and a reposted job look identical on the day the old link dies.

Two examples from our readings. Perplexity’s “Member of Technical Staff (New Grad)” first appeared on September 27 and came back under a new link dated September 29. 1X’s “Engineering Technician” in Hayward, California, first posted June 17, came back with a September 29 date.

The 1X case matters if you sort by date. A job that had been open for more than three months now looked six days old. That is one reason we wrote whether you should apply to old job postings from board data, not from the date on the page.

Our 13 is a floor, not the full count. We matched exact titles only. A repost with a reworded title, or one that came back after October 5, is not in it.

Which AI companies took down the most postings this week?

OpenAI removed the most links in the week to October 5, 2026, 62, but it also added 60; ElevenLabs had the biggest net drop, from 202 open roles to 170. xAI had the biggest net gain, from 276 to 301.

Board Open Sep. 28 → Oct. 5 Taken down / new
xAI 276 → 301 (+25) 9 / 34
Anthropic 622 → 638 (+16) 46 / 62
Agility Robotics 69 → 79 (+10) 5 / 15
Waymo 358 → 364 (+6) 24 / 30
OpenAI 830 → 828 (−2) 62 / 60
Scale AI 203 → 192 (−11) 18 / 7
ElevenLabs 202 → 170 (−32) 47 / 15
All 19 boards 3,858 → 3,853 (−5) 280 / 275

ElevenLabs’ drop was mostly outside the US: 22 of its 47 removed postings were US roles. Many were the same job in several countries, such as solutions engineer and deployment strategist roles for Spain, France and India.

xAI’s 34 new links split two ways. Ten were AI Tutor roles in new languages, from Chinese to Ukrainian. Ten were in Memphis or Southaven, and 11 sat in its Data Center department, including carpenter and technician jobs. Our AI data center electrician pay report covers that build-out.

Were the removed postings old ones?

Mostly middle-aged: the median removed posting had been up 60.5 days on September 28, 2026, and 46% of removals were 31 to 90 days old, against 38% of the roles still open on October 5. The oldest postings were less likely to vanish.

Paired bar chart comparing the age of 280 removed postings with 3,853 still-open postings on October 5, 2026: 0 to 7 days 5 percent vs 7 percent, 8 to 30 days 15 vs 18, 31 to 90 days 46 vs 38, 91 to 180 days 20 vs 17, 181 plus days 14 vs 19.
Coral bars are the 280 removals; gray bars are everything still open on October 5. Age is counted from the first date the board shows for each posting.

Postings older than 180 days were 19% of what stayed open but only 14% of what came down. Some of those long-running links are evergreen roles that companies keep open all year. This is one week of data, so treat the gap as a lead, not a rule.

For applicants, the practical read is simple. An old date does not mean a dead job, and a fresh date does not mean a fresh job. Check the link itself, then check the board.

Can you still apply after a posting comes down?

Not through that link: on October 5, 2026, every removed posting we could open either said “Job not found” or dropped us onto a list, with no form to submit. If you already applied, nothing on these pages says your application was withdrawn.

Here is what we would do, in order. First, search the company’s board for the same title, since 13 of 280 came back that way this week. Second, set an alert for that company, so a repost reaches you. Third, if a recruiter already contacted you, ask them directly; the page will not answer.

Our free AI jobs board lists every open role from these 19 employers and links straight to the employer’s page, so you can browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site. A link that disappears from our board one morning disappeared from the employer’s system first.

We are not recruiters and take no money from employers. Postings can close at any time, and the employer’s own page always wins over ours. Never pay to apply, never deposit a check and send money back, treat a texted “offer” as unconfirmed, and apply only on the employer’s own domain. More in our Jobs Desk sources and scam rules.

How many AI jobs were open on October 5?

3,853 roles were open on October 5, 2026 across the 19 boards we read, 5 fewer than on September 28; 3,072 were in the US, 14 more than the week before. The daily total moved between 3,852 and 3,888 during the week.

The middle of the posted pay bands did not move. Among US postings that print a range, the median low end was $226,000 and the median high end was $310,250 on October 5, against $225,000 and $310,000 a week earlier. Remote-tagged roles fell from 522 to 492.

Roles our scanner flags as entry-level, such as technician, apprentice and new-grad jobs, rose from 130 to 144 in the US. Of the net 14, xAI added 8 and Waymo added 5. See entry-level AI jobs with no experience for how we define that flag.

Next Monday, October 12, we will check two things: whether the 13 reposted titles stay up, and whether ElevenLabs keeps shrinking or refills its country roles.

Two news videos on postings that stay up too long

Most video coverage is about the opposite problem, postings that stay up with no real job behind them. We checked both videos below on October 5, 2026; both play here. We have not checked their claims against our data.

CNBC, “What The Rise Of Fake Job Listings Says About The Job Market” (August 2024), 1,660,839 views when checked October 5, 2026.
CBS Mornings, “How to avoid falling for ghost job opportunities” (January 2025), 11,292 views when checked October 5, 2026.

Our week adds the other half of that story. On these 19 boards, removals were constant and quiet, and a few roles came straight back under new links.

Quick answers on removed and reposted job postings

What does it mean when a job posting is taken down?

The employer closed that link. Between September 28 and October 5, 2026, 280 postings came down on 19 AI job boards, and none of the pages we could open said why.

If a job posting is taken down does that mean the position is filled?

Not always. 13 of the 280 postings removed in the week to October 5, 2026 came back at the same company with the same title and a new link.

What does it mean when a job posting is taken down before an interview?

The page will not tell you. Ask the recruiter who scheduled the interview. In our week, removed postings ranged from under 7 days to over 180 days old.

Why do job postings get reposted?

Companies do not say on the page. What we can see is the result: a reposted job gets a new link and a new date, so a role open since June 17 looked six days old.

Can I still apply after a job posting is removed?

Not through the old link. Search the same title on the employer board and set a company alert, since some removed roles come back within days.

How many AI jobs are open right now?

3,853 on October 5, 2026 across 19 AI employer boards, 5 fewer than on September 28. 3,072 were US roles. Our tracker updates daily.

Between September 28 and October 5, 2026, 280 job postings came down and 275 went up on the public boards of 19 AI employers, leaving 3,853 open roles (−5); 13 removed postings returned under the same title with a new link. Source: profhlab.com AI Jobs Desk, What Does It Mean When a Job Posting Is Taken Down?, with daily numbers on the AI jobs tracker.

How we counted: a posting is “taken down” if its exact link was in our September 28, 2026 reading and not in our October 5 reading. “New” means a link we had not seen on September 28; it can be a fresh job or an old job with a new link. Reposts were matched on company plus exact title. Postings that went up and came down inside the same week are not counted.

On October 5, 2026 we requested all 280 removed links once each, without following redirects, then opened examples from each group in a browser. The Ashby “Job not found” text and the Agility page were read in that browser; the Greenhouse closed notice appeared in a local-language version, so we describe it rather than quote it.
