What Does Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Experience Mean? We Read 3,811 AI Job Postings on Oct. 7, 2026

It means the degree is one way to qualify, not the only one: on October 7, 2026 we read 3,811 job postings on 19 AI-company boards, and 925 of the 1,325 that name a bachelor’s degree also accept experience or training instead. The employer decides what counts as “equivalent.” When a posting puts a number on it, the number we found ran from 2 to 8 years of work, with a median of 4.

What we checked on October 7, 2026

We pulled the full text of every open posting on the public job boards behind our AI jobs tracker, using each board’s own Greenhouse or Ashby feed. Then we sorted every sentence that names a bachelor’s degree.

  • 3,811 postings read from 19 boards, OpenAI and Anthropic through Waymo and Nuro. Google DeepMind’s US board returned an error, so it is unread, not zero.
  • 1,325 name a bachelor’s (or a BS or BA). 2,486 never mention one.
  • 925 of the 1,325 put “or equivalent” or “in lieu of” wording next to the degree. 638 of those are one identical line on every Anthropic posting.
  • 29 postings swap the degree for a stated number of years. We read each of them by eye.

Written and checked by Prof. H. An AI assistant helped draft this piece and run the page reads; every count comes from the October 7, 2026 reading, and every quote was read on the posting itself that day.

Bar chart of 3,811 AI job postings on October 7, 2026 by degree wording: 2,486 name no bachelor's degree, 638 carry Anthropic's standard or-equivalent line, 287 other postings offer an alternative, 296 name the degree with no alternative nearby, and 104 list it only as preferred or as a student requirement.

What does “bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience” mean on a job posting?

On the 1,325 AI job postings that named a bachelor’s degree on October 7, 2026, the phrase meant the same thing each time: a degree is the expected proof, and work, training or study that taught the same skills is accepted in its place. It does not promise that both paths are judged equally. It promises that the second path exists.

The wording varies. OpenAI’s AI Support Engineer, Government posting asks for a computer science or related degree “or equivalent practical experience.” Nuro’s Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure and Observability posting accepts a degree “or 3+ years of equivalent experience.”

Some lines are broader. Every one of Anthropic’s 638 postings on October 7 carried the same sentence: “Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.” The next line says the field of study can be shown “through coursework, training, or professional experience.”

That last part matters if you studied one thing and work in another. On Anthropic’s pages, the field is something you demonstrate, not something printed on a diploma. Our look at whether Anthropic is hiring covers what else those postings ask for.

How many years of experience equal a bachelor’s degree?

There is no single number: in the 29 AI postings that named one on October 7, 2026, the years accepted in place of a bachelor’s ran from 2 to 8, and the median was 4. Eight of the 29 asked for 2 years. Three asked for 8.

Bar chart of 29 AI job postings on October 7, 2026 that accept years of experience instead of a bachelor's degree: 2 years in 8 postings, 3 years in 2, 4 years in 6, 5 years in 3, 6 years in 6, 7 years in 1 and 8 years in 3. Median 4 years.
The 29 postings come from three employers: xAI (18), Waymo (10) and Nuro (1). The bar at 4 years is the median.

The median lines up with at least one public employer’s rule. A table from the Oregon Judicial Department, updated April 3, 2023 and read on October 7, 2026, says a bachelor’s “is equivalent to 4 years of experience.” The same table sets an associate degree at 2 years and a master’s at 5.

Private employers do not have to follow a table like that, and the AI postings show it. Waymo’s Software Quality Operations Specialist postings ask for “BS/BA degree or 4 years of relevant work experience.” Another version of the same title asks for 8. The number tracks the job, not a formula.

We searched all 3,811 postings for a per-year conversion, such as a set number of years of work for each year of college, and found none. If you have seen that rule elsewhere, we did not find it on these boards on October 7.

Why do some xAI jobs accept only 2 years in place of a degree?

The 2-year swaps cluster in hands-on facilities work: on October 7, 2026, 7 of the 8 postings that accepted 2 years were xAI technician or facilities roles, all listed in Memphis, Tennessee or Southaven, Mississippi. The eighth was an xAI network software job in Palo Alto and Seattle.

The xAI Chiller Technician posting reads: “Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical or 2+ years of hands-on operations/facilities work experience in lieu of degree.” Senior versions of the same roles ask for 6 years instead of 2.

The engineering side of the same buildings asks for more. xAI’s Ops/Build Engineer (Transmission & Distribution) posting accepts “8+ years of substation field experience in lieu of a degree.” Its Network Engineer (Battery Storage) posting accepts 6.

If you already work in building maintenance, HVAC or electrical trades, these postings are the clearest case we found of experience standing in for a diploma. Our guides to becoming a data center technician, what AI data center electricians make and xAI’s Memphis jobs and pay go further.

Which AI companies offer an alternative to the degree most often?

It depends heavily on the company: on October 7, 2026, all 638 Anthropic postings offered an alternative, while 1X offered one on 7 of the 43 postings that named a bachelor’s. Some employers barely mention degrees at all, which is its own kind of answer.

Employer Open postings Name a bachelor’s With an alternative
Anthropic 638 638 638
OpenAI 823 60 34
Waymo 368 190 91
xAI 305 122 45
Apptronik 79 64 22
1X 98 43 7
Nuro 104 37 8
ElevenLabs 135 0 0

Read the OpenAI row carefully. Only 60 of its 823 postings name a bachelor’s at all. Most OpenAI postings describe skills and past work and leave education out, so “no alternative offered” there rarely means “degree required.”

The robot makers lean the other way. Apptronik named a bachelor’s on 64 of 79 postings, 1X on 43 of 98. Many of those are engineering jobs, and most did not offer an alternative. If you are aiming at the hands-on side of robotics instead, see whether robotics technicians need a degree.

When is a bachelor’s degree a hard requirement?

Rarely in plain words: only 5 of 3,811 AI postings on October 7, 2026 said “Bachelor’s degree required,” two at Anthropic, two at Mercor and one at Replit, all in sales or strategy roles. Another 296 named a degree with no alternative and no “preferred” in the same passage.

The two Anthropic postings are a puzzle worth seeing. Both GTM Strategy & Operations roles say “Bachelor’s degree required,” and both also carry the company’s standard “or an equivalent combination” line further down. We cannot tell from the page which line the hiring team follows. That is an open question, not a finding.

The 296 count is an estimate. It comes from a pattern match: a degree named, with no “or equivalent,” “in lieu of,” “preferred” or “plus” nearby. Some of those sit in a preferred list the pattern did not catch. Treat it as “about 300,” or 8% of all postings.

Licensed work is the real hard line. A posting that needs a professional engineer license or a certified electrician cannot be met with “equivalent” years alone, because the license itself has rules. Our piece on whether an AI certificate is worth it explains which credentials employers actually ask for.

Should you apply if you have no degree but the posting says “or equivalent”?

The postings invite it: on October 7, 2026, 925 AI job postings told readers in writing that a degree is not the only way in. What the pages do not say is how a reviewer will weigh your years against someone else’s diploma. We could not see that, and neither can you before you apply.

Here is what we would do with these numbers, based only on what the postings say:

  • Match the years first. If the posting names a number, count your relevant years against it honestly. If it does not, the 2-to-8 range above is the spread we saw.
  • Use the posting’s words. If it says “equivalent practical experience,” name the practical work on your resume in those terms, with dates.
  • Show the field. Anthropic’s pages say the field can be shown through coursework, training or work. List the courses and projects that prove it.
  • Skip what you cannot meet. A license requirement is not a negotiation.

Scripps News on the “paper ceiling” for workers without degrees

This short report covers the wider push to drop degree requirements, which is the backdrop for the “or equivalent” wording above. We list it for context and did not use it for any count in this piece.
