Free ChatGPT Plus for Students: 4 Months, and the Cancel Rule That Costs You 3
Yes, again — for four months this time. OpenAI is giving current US college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus if they claim by October 31, 2026. You verify through SheerID, you enter a card, and it renews at $20 a month when the four months are up. The one rule most people will get wrong runs backwards from every other free trial: if you cancel early, you lose the free months you have not used yet. The safe move is to cancel in month four, not on day one.
What we checked on September 19, 2026
We read OpenAI’s own help-centre article for the 2026 Back to School offer line by line, and compared it with the three other student AI offers we track on our AI perks and deals page.
- This is not the spring 2025 promotion, which ended May 31, 2025. It is a new offer with different terms.
- OpenAI says a valid payment method is required and you are not charged during the four free periods.
- Cancelling ends Plus at the close of the current billing period, and “any remaining promotional months are forfeited.”
- Subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play cannot receive it while they stay store-billed.
The cancel rule that works the opposite way to every other trial
The standard advice for a free trial is to claim it and cancel straight away. You keep access until the trial ends, and the renewal never happens. Do that here and you get one month, not four.
OpenAI’s terms say that when you cancel, Plus continues to the end of the current monthly billing period, and after that the remaining promotional months are gone. The four free months are not one block of time. They are four separate billing periods, and cancelling stops the clock on the ones that have not started.
So the reminder goes in your calendar for two days before the four months run out — four months after the day you claim, not the day itself. Claim today and that is mid-January 2027. Claim on the last possible day, October 31, and it is the end of February.
Who qualifies, and who the fine print turns away
The offer is open to current full-time and part-time college and graduate students enrolled at an eligible US degree-granting institution. SheerID decides whether your school and your enrolment count. Depending on the school it checks trusted records, asks you to sign in through the school’s login, or asks for a document.
Four details decide whether this works for you, and none of them is in the headline:
- Part-time counts. You do not have to be full-time.
- You already had the 2025 offer? You can still claim. OpenAI says taking part in an earlier student promotion does not, by itself, rule you out.
- Already paying for Plus? You can claim — but only if you pay OpenAI directly on the web. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app store, the offer cannot be applied while that store subscription is active.
- It lands on whichever ChatGPT account is signed in. Your SheerID email can be your school address and your ChatGPT account your personal one. OpenAI says it cannot move the offer to another account afterwards, so check which account you are in before you start.
You can redeem it once. Community college students should check carefully: the offer names degree-granting institutions, and SheerID makes the call. If you are in Ohio, a separate OpenAI programme for Codex credits covers community and technical colleges explicitly — it is on our deals page.
How to claim it without losing a month
- If you pay for Plus through an app store, move it first. Cancel it in the App Store or Google Play and wait for it to lapse, then continue on the web. Do not cancel a web-billed Plus subscription — you can claim on top of it.
- Open the Back to School offer page in a web browser (OpenAI says a web or mobile web browser, so use a browser rather than the app) and sign in to the ChatGPT account you want it on.
- Verify your enrolment with SheerID. Have your student portal login ready.
- Return to the offer flow and finish activation. New subscribers add a card here. You will not be charged for the four free periods.
- Check that it applied. If SheerID approved you but nothing changed, OpenAI says to confirm you are in the same account, open the offer link again and click Claim free offer.
- Set one reminder for two days before the four months run out. Decide then whether Plus is worth $20 a month to you.
What Plus gets you in September 2026, and what it does not
OpenAI says the offer includes ChatGPT Work and the other Plus features. On its pricing page, read the same day, Plus lists GPT‑5.6-based reasoning, higher message and upload limits, more deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and more Codex use than the free tier.
What it does not get you is GPT‑6 Astra in the ordinary chat window. OpenAI’s pricing page attaches Astra-based “expert reasoning” to the Pro plan, not Plus. Stacking it with the other three student offers
This is one of four AI offers a US college student can hold at the same time. They come from different companies, do not conflict, and end on different dates — which is exactly why they are easy to lose track of.

If you are choosing only one, the Google year is the longer gift and has the later deadline. The ChatGPT one is the one with a deadline in six weeks. Claim ChatGPT Plus first, Google second — and keep in mind that the Google offer also asks for a card and renews at $19.99 a month.
Not a student? Two other groups OpenAI is giving Plus to
Recently separated service members and veterans. OpenAI gives a free year of ChatGPT Plus to US service members who will leave active duty within the next 12 months, and to veterans and retirees who left within the last 12 months. Verification is through ID.me, not SheerID, at chatgpt.com/veterans-claim. The offer runs for one year from the day you claim it. OpenAI’s terms tell existing web Plus subscribers not to cancel before applying it.

What four free months is worth, stated carefully
Four billing periods at $20 is $80. Add the Google AI Pro year at $19.99 a month and a student who claims both is holding about $320 in subscriptions for nothing. That number is only real if both reminders get set. If neither does, the same student is paying $20 a month from early 2027 and about $40 a month by the following autumn. What we could not confirm
- The start date. OpenAI’s article gives the October 31 deadline but not the day the offer opened. The help article was last updated in late August 2026.
- Exactly which schools pass. OpenAI leaves that to SheerID and publishes no list.
- Whether the $20 renewal includes sales tax. The article states $20 a month; tax depends on your state.
- The veterans offer’s renewal terms. OpenAI’s veterans terms say the offer expires one year after the claim date but, unlike the student article, do not spell out the renewal price. Read the checkout screen.

Is ChatGPT Plus free for students in 2026?
Yes, for four monthly billing periods. OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible US college and graduate students four free months of Plus if they claim by October 31, 2026. After that it renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.
Do I need a credit card for the ChatGPT student offer?
Yes. OpenAI requires a valid payment method to activate it. You are not charged during the four free periods, and the card is billed $20 a month from the fifth.
Can I cancel right away and keep the four free months?

I used the 2025 student promotion. Am I eligible again?
Yes, if you meet the current requirements. OpenAI says taking part in an earlier student promotion does not by itself prevent you from claiming this one. The 2025 offer itself ended May 31, 2025.
Are international students eligible?
The requirement is enrolment at an eligible US degree-granting institution, verified by SheerID. OpenAI does not state a citizenship requirement. Students at schools outside the US are not covered by this offer.
