ChatGPT Nonprofit Discount vs Claude for Nonprofits: Both $8 a Seat, Different Rules

Yes, both ChatGPT and Claude have a nonprofit discount, and on October 3, 2026 they cost the same: $8 per user per month for a standard team seat, against a $20 list price. That is 60% off, not the “up to 75%” in both companies’ headlines. The price is a tie. The rules are not: who qualifies, how big you can be before you are sent to sales, and what happens the moment one person on your team needs a premium seat.

Picture a food bank with six staff. The director has been paying $20 a month for her own ChatGPT Plus, the grants writer pays for Claude Pro, and two volunteers share a free account. The board asks the obvious question: is there a nonprofit plan, and which one? This page answers it with the numbers each company prints on its own pages today, and flags the three places where those pages contradict the roundups — and in one case, each other.

What we checked on October 3, 2026

  • OpenAI Help Center: “OpenAI for Nonprofits” and “ChatGPT Business: General FAQ,” plus OpenAI’s original announcement post.
  • Anthropic: the Claude for Nonprofits page, the claude.com pricing page, the December 2, 2025 announcement and the Claude Team plan for scientists help article.
  • Every price below is the provider’s own. Where a provider does not print something, we say so rather than fill the gap. We take no commission from either company and there are no affiliate links on this page.
  • Written and checked by Prof. H. An AI assistant helped draft this page and run the page reads; every price was read on the provider’s own page on the date shown.
What a nonprofit AI seat costs: ChatGPT Business standard seat $8 billed annually or $10 monthly, premium seat not discounted at $100, Claude Team standard seat $8, and a $3 Claude rate for low- and middle-income countries
Same headline price; different fine print. Prices read on Oct. 3, 2026, on each provider’s own page.

ChatGPT and Claude nonprofit pricing, side by side

Both programmes discount the same kind of product: a shared team workspace, not a personal subscription. OpenAI’s is called ChatGPT Business. Anthropic’s is Claude Team. Neither company offers a nonprofit price on the personal Plus or Pro plans.

The list prices line up exactly. Both companies charge $20 a seat billed annually and $25 billed monthly for a standard team seat, and $100 annually for a premium seat. So the $8 nonprofit price is the same 60% off on both sides, measured against the annual rate.

Why OpenAI’s own pages disagree about the ChatGPT nonprofit discount

Search “ChatGPT nonprofit discount” and two different numbers come back, both from OpenAI.

OpenAI’s original announcement, dated May 30, 2024, is still live. It describes the offer as 20% off ChatGPT Business monthly or annual plans. The help-centre article, read on October 3, 2026 and updated in the week before, prints a flat price instead: $8 per user per month billed annually, or $10 billed monthly.

Against today’s $20 and $25 list prices, $8 and $10 are both 60% off. The help centre is where the discount is applied, so that is the number to plan on. At least one nonprofit-discount roundup ranking in search on October 3, 2026 still repeats the 20%. If a board member forwards one like it, this is why it is out of date.

The same thing happened to the Enterprise figure. The help centre now says larger nonprofits can get “up to a 75% discount” on ChatGPT Enterprise through sales. That ceiling is negotiated, not printed on a price list, and it is the number most headlines lead with. A two-to-twenty-person organisation buying Business seats online gets 60%.

The premium-seat trap. OpenAI’s nonprofit discount covers standard seats only. In a workspace with both kinds, only the standard seats are reduced. One premium seat is $100 a month billed annually — more than twelve discounted standard seats ($96). Before anyone on your team asks for “the bigger plan,” look at what that does to the bill.

What a small nonprofit actually pays per year

Here is the arithmetic for four common shapes of team, using only the prices above. We worked these out ourselves; neither company publishes these totals.

Team ChatGPT Business, nonprofit Claude Team, nonprofit Same seats at list price
2 standard seats (the minimum)$192/yr billed annually$192/yr at $8$480/yr
6 standard seats$576/yr annually; $720/yr monthly$576/yr at $8$1,440/yr
5 standard + 1 premium$1,680/yr annually (premium is $1,200 of it)Not calculable: no nonprofit premium price printed$2,400/yr
19 standard seats (Claude’s self-service ceiling)$1,824/yr annually$1,824/yr at $8$4,560/yr

Three things jump out of that table.

  • Paying monthly costs a quarter more. On ChatGPT, six seats are $576 a year billed annually and $720 billed monthly. The $144 gap buys you the right to cancel any month. For a small charity with uncertain funding, that can be worth it.
  • One premium seat dominates the bill. In the five-plus-one team, the single premium seat is $1,200 of $1,680 — 71% of the spend for one person. Ask whether that person really needs five times the usage.
  • The team plan costs less than the personal one. A nonprofit standard seat at $8 is less than half a personal ChatGPT Plus subscription at $20, and less than half of Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually. Our food bank’s director, paying $20 a month on her own card, would pay $8 inside a nonprofit workspace, with shared projects and admin controls on top.

One caveat on the Claude column. Anthropic’s nonprofit page prints “$8/user per month” without saying whether that is the annual or the monthly rate. We used $8 for every Claude figure. Check the checkout screen before you commit, because on the list price the two billing options differ by $5 a seat.

Decision guide for nonprofits choosing between ChatGPT and Claude: schools and rural clinics, organisations of 20 or more people, premium seats, and research institutes
Four questions decide it before price does.

Who qualifies for Claude for Nonprofits, and who OpenAI leaves unsaid

Anthropic is specific. Its page lists registered 501(c)(3) organisations and their international equivalents, K–12 public and private schools, and four kinds of mission-based health provider: independent Critical Access Hospitals, Rural Emergency Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics.

OpenAI is not. Its help article says only that it “partners with Goodstack to validate nonprofit eligibility criteria.” It does not say whether a school district or a rural clinic counts. That does not mean they are excluded. It means the answer is Goodstack’s, not OpenAI’s, and you find out when you apply.

If you run a K–12 school, there is a second route worth knowing about. Individual teachers can get free Claude for a year and free ChatGPT for Teachers through June 2028. Both are listed on our AI perks and deals page. The nonprofit plans are for the school as an organisation, paying for staff seats together.

The 20-person line that sends you to sales

Anthropic’s page says organisations with fewer than 20 people can verify through Goodstack and start straight away. Larger organisations are told to contact sales. The Team tier itself runs to 150 seats.

Our reading is that a nonprofit of 25 people wanting 10 seats still goes through sales, because the line is drawn on the size of the organisation, not on the number of seats. Anthropic does not spell that case out, so treat it as our interpretation. OpenAI’s article draws no size line for Business; any eligible nonprofit applies through the same form.

The research-institute exception: free Claude seats instead of $8

One group of nonprofits should not take the nonprofit plan at all, at least not first. Anthropic’s Claude Team plan for scientists, launched August 27, 2026, gives verified research groups free standard seats and premium seats at $15 a month, for 12 months.

It is open to a principal investigator or equivalent at an accredited university or a nonprofit research institute, working in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering or a related field. The PI applies and can then add postdocs, graduate students and researchers, from 1 to 25 seats.

Read the conditions before choosing it over the nonprofit plan. It is offered to “a limited number of groups.” After 12 months, seats renew at “the then-current price” for the plan, with notice to admins first. A group with no activity for 90 days may be moved back to standard Team pricing. Most applications are reviewed within seven business days. We compare it with three other programmes for academics in free AI for researchers.

We found no official video about either discount. Each company has posted a short one about nonprofits learning its tools; both play here.

Anthropic, “AI Fluency for nonprofits course trailer” (December 2, 2025, the day Claude for Nonprofits was announced), 32,528 views when checked October 5, 2026. Anthropic says the full course, built with Giving Tuesday, is free.
OpenAI, “How East Bay Nonprofits Are Putting AI to Work” (July 8, 2026), 1,127 views when checked October 5, 2026. It comes from an OpenAI Academy workshop in Oakland run with TechSoup and Oakstop; its description does not mention the discount.

How to claim a nonprofit AI discount without paying full price first

The order matters. On both programmes, verification comes before the discounted checkout. Here is the sequence we would follow.

  1. Count your people, not just your seats. Under 20 people, either programme is self-service. At 20 or more, Claude sends you to sales.
  2. Decide whether anyone needs a premium seat. On ChatGPT that seat is full price. If the answer is “maybe later,” start everyone on standard.
  3. Have your registration documents ready. Goodstack validates eligibility for both companies. For a US charity that normally means your 501(c)(3) status.
  4. Apply before you buy. For ChatGPT, fill in OpenAI’s nonprofit form using the email you will use for the Business account; once approved, the discount applies automatically to standard seats at checkout. For Claude, verify through Goodstack and wait for the email that lets you finish setup with the discount applied.
  5. Choose annual or monthly on purpose. On ChatGPT, annual is $96 a seat a year and monthly $120. Annual is cheaper; monthly lets you stop.
  6. Put the renewal date in a shared calendar. Two days before, not on the day.

Already on ChatGPT Business? OpenAI says existing subscribers can apply with the email tied to their account, and if approved, a prorated discount applies to the current billing cycle and future bills. You do not need to cancel and start again.

Before you enter a card. Both plans are paid subscriptions that renew automatically until you cancel. Neither company prints an end date for its nonprofit pricing, and Anthropic’s page states that “price and plans are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion.” Annual billing commits a full year of seats up front. And on our reading of both companies’ steps, a Business or Team checkout made before verification clears bills at list price — $20 or $25 a seat — which is why verification comes first. If you are unsure about putting an organisation card into an AI service at all, our piece on whether it is safe to give ChatGPT your credit card covers what card protections apply.

So which nonprofit plan should you choose?

Price will not decide it, because on standard seats there is no difference. These four conditions do:

  • Choose Claude if you are a K–12 school or a rural or community health provider, because Anthropic names you explicitly. The same goes if you are based in a low- or middle-income country, where the $3 rate applies.
  • Choose ChatGPT if you have 20 or more people but only want a handful of seats bought online, since OpenAI’s Business discount has no organisation-size line.
  • Apply for the scientists plan first if you are a PI at a nonprofit research institute. Free standard seats beat $8 ones, for the 12 months they last.
  • Otherwise, pick the tool your staff already use. Our food bank’s director uses ChatGPT and the grants writer uses Claude. At $8 a seat, two seats on each side ($384 a year in total on annual billing) costs less than the two personal subscriptions they pay for now ($37 to $40 a month, depending on how Claude Pro is billed).

Here is that last comparison worked through. The two personal plans are $20 for Plus and $17 for Claude Pro billed annually, or $20 billed monthly. That comes to $444–$480 a year. Two nonprofit seats on each platform is four seats at $8: $384 a year, with the same two people covered plus two colleagues. Both workspaces need two seats minimum, which is why it is four seats, not two.

Google and Microsoft nonprofit plans are not in these tables

Google and Microsoft run their own nonprofit programmes for Workspace and Microsoft 365, and both now bundle AI features. We did not re-verify either on October 3, 2026, so they are not in the tables. We will not print their prices until we have read them on the provider’s own page. List prices for every major AI plan are tracked weekly on our AI price tracker. What a full month of AI use really costs, plan by plan, is in the real monthly cost of AI.

The 20% figure, K-12 schools and who verifies your status

Does ChatGPT have a nonprofit discount?

Yes. Through OpenAI for Nonprofits, eligible organisations pay $8 per user per month for ChatGPT Business standard seats billed annually, or $10 billed monthly, against list prices of $20 and $25. Premium seats are not discounted. Larger nonprofits can ask sales for up to 75% off ChatGPT Enterprise.

Is the ChatGPT nonprofit discount 20% or 75%?

Neither, for a typical small nonprofit. OpenAI’s 2024 announcement said 20% off Business, but its help centre now prints $8 a seat billed annually, which is 60% off the $20 list price. The 75% figure is the ceiling for ChatGPT Enterprise, negotiated through sales.

How much does Claude for Nonprofits cost?

Anthropic lists Claude Team for nonprofits at $8 per user per month, with a minimum of two seats, and $3 per user per month for nonprofits based in low- and middle-income countries. The standard list price is $20 billed annually or $25 monthly. Anthropic’s nonprofit page does not say which billing basis the $8 applies to.

Can a nonprofit get ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at a discount?

Not on the pages we read. Both programmes discount team workspaces — ChatGPT Business and Claude Team — not personal subscriptions. Because both need only two seats, a nonprofit seat at $8 costs less than a personal Plus or Pro plan anyway.

Do K-12 schools qualify for nonprofit AI pricing?

For Claude, yes: Anthropic lists K–12 public and private schools as eligible. OpenAI’s nonprofit article does not list organisation types and leaves eligibility to Goodstack’s criteria, so a school should apply and see. Individual teachers can separately get free Claude for Teachers or ChatGPT for Teachers.

Who verifies nonprofit status for ChatGPT and Claude?

Goodstack, for both. Anthropic says Team verification takes about two to three minutes for organisations under 20 people; larger organisations and Enterprise customers are verified by its nonprofit sales team. OpenAI uses an application form, and questions about a rejected application go to Goodstack.

If you know of a nonprofit AI programme we have missed, tell us on the Ask page and we will verify it on the provider’s own page and add it with a date.
