Do Tech Companies Drug Test? 41 of 3,832 AI Job Postings Say So (Oct. 17, 2026)
Rarely, and only for certain jobs: on October 17, 2026, we read all 3,832 open postings on 19 AI and robotics company job boards, and 41 of them, 1.1%, said the applicant would take a drug test. Every one of the 41 is a job on a physical site or behind the wheel: 37 xAI data center and construction roles in Memphis and Southaven, and 4 Nuro vehicle operator roles in California. None of the 98 software, research and machine learning postings at those same two companies mentions one.
Seventeen of the 19 boards, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Waymo, had no drug-test wording at all. Below is the exact language, the jobs it covers, what California law says about cannabis tests, and the background-check wording that turns up far more often.
How we counted, October 17, 2026
- Every open posting on the 19 boards behind our AI jobs tracker: 3,832 postings, 3,096 of them in the U.S., read in full through the public Greenhouse and Ashby job feeds. Google DeepMind’s U.S. board, a 20th board we track, returned “not found” and is not counted.
- We searched each full posting for drug-test wording (drug test, drug screen, drug and alcohol testing, urine, cannabis, marijuana and similar terms), then read every match by eye. One match, a Nuro lawyer role that mentions “drug testing regulations” as a work topic, is not a test of applicants, so we left it out.
- We read California Government Code section 12954 on the Legislature’s own site. We did not apply to any job, see any offer letter or contact any employer.

Do tech companies drug test new hires?
At 17 of the 19 AI and robotics companies we checked on October 17, 2026, no posting says so: 0 of 3,419 postings at those boards mention a drug test. The other two, xAI and Nuro, name a test only on 41 site and vehicle jobs.
That matches what tech workers have long said on forums, but forum answers are secondhand. A posting is the employer’s own words about the job. It is also not the whole policy: an offer letter can add conditions a posting leaves out, and we saw none. So read this as “what the postings say,” not a promise about any company’s practice.
| Board | Open postings | Say you will be drug tested |
|---|---|---|
| xAI | 305 | 37, all in Memphis or Southaven |
| Nuro | 108 | 4, all vehicle operators |
| OpenAI | 815 | 0 |
| Anthropic | 656 | 0 |
| Waymo | 362 | 0 |
| 14 other boards | 1,586 | 0 |

Which tech jobs require a drug test?
Hands-on site jobs: of the 41 postings with drug-test wording on October 17, 2026, 23 are technicians, electricians or vehicle operators, 15 are construction or project leads, and 3 are on-site engineers. No office, software or research title is among them.
The xAI roles cluster around its data center campus. Titles include Data Center Operations Technician, Chiller Technician, Senior Medium-Voltage Electrician, Supervisor, Fiber, and seven Construction Superintendent postings across electrical, mechanical, structural and power work. Fifteen of the 37 are technician roles our tracker counts as entry-level.
Nuro’s four are Autonomous Vehicle Operator postings in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the people who sit behind the wheel of test cars. They pay $26 to $28.25 an hour by shift, per the postings, with a weekend differential.

Does xAI drug test employees?
For 37 Memphis-area site jobs, yes, per the postings we read on October 17, 2026; for its other 268 postings, the text does not say. The usual line reads: “Position is subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing.”
Note the word random: 36 of the 37 postings say it. They describe testing after hire, not only before it. The same block usually adds that the position “is subject to pre-employment and annual post-employment background checks,” as on the Data Center Operations Technician posting.
The Construction Superintendent postings phrase it slightly differently, “Subject to pre-employment drug screening and random drug and alcohol testing,” on the electrical version among others. xAI’s Memphis-area postings number 172, so the 37 are about one in five of them. Our xAI Memphis jobs and salary read covers what those roles pay.

Do data center jobs drug test?
At xAI they do: every one of the 37 drug-test postings we found on October 17, 2026 is a data center, power or construction job at its Memphis and Southaven sites. We cannot speak for other data center employers; our 19 boards include no cloud provider or colocation company.
The pattern makes sense once you look at the work. These postings describe medium-voltage electrical gear, chillers, generators and active construction zones, plus lifting and long shifts. Safety-sensitive work is where employers most often write testing into the job, but that is our reading of the list, not a reason any posting gives.
If this is the path you want, our guides to becoming a data center technician with no experience and what AI data center electricians make use the same posting data.
Does Nuro drug test its vehicle operators?
Yes: all 4 Nuro Autonomous Vehicle Operator postings we read on October 17, 2026 require applicants to pass a background check and a drug test. The posting asks you to “pass a background check and drug screen,” and later repeats it under pre-employment qualifications.
The San Francisco operator posting also asks for a valid California license, three consecutive years of U.S. driving history and a clean driving record. Applicants must qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester license where state law requires one.
Nuro’s other 104 postings, including its software roles, carry no drug-test wording. Waymo, the larger self-driving employer on our list, had none on any of its 362 postings; our is Waymo hiring read shows which roles it has open.

Do software engineers get drug tested?
Not according to any posting we read: on October 17, 2026, 0 of the 98 software, research and machine learning postings at xAI and Nuro mentioned a drug test, and neither did any posting at the 17 other boards. Those 17 are mostly software companies, so this is the clearest answer in the data.
The caveat is jobs that need a government clearance. Ninety-eight postings across the 19 boards mention a security clearance or public trust position. We did not sort them into required and preferred, and none of them carried drug-test wording in the text.
Clearance work is where federal rules, not company habits, set the terms. California’s cannabis law, below, carves those jobs out on purpose.

Can a California employer reject you for cannabis on a drug test?
Mostly not for off-duty use: California Government Code section 12954, operative since January 1, 2024, makes it unlawful to discriminate in hiring based on off-the-job cannabis use or a test that finds only nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites. Employers may still use tests that do not screen for those metabolites.
The section also bars employers from asking applicants about prior cannabis use. It does not let anyone use or be impaired by cannabis on the job, and it keeps an employer’s right to a drug- and alcohol-free workplace.
Three carve-outs matter here. The protection “does not apply to an employee in the building and construction trades.” It also does not apply to jobs that need a federal background investigation or security clearance, or override laws that require testing.
Nuro’s four tested roles are in California; its postings do not say what the test screens for, and we do not know. xAI’s 37 are in Tennessee and Mississippi, where California’s statute does not apply. We did not research those two states’ rules, so we say nothing about them.
Why did California change its drug-test rules in 2024?
KESQ News Channel 3 covered the law as it was about to take effect, in a report uploaded December 19, 2023, with 8,650 views when we checked on October 17, 2026. CNBC’s longer piece on xAI in Memphis shows the sites where most of the tested jobs sit.
Do tech companies do background checks?
Far more postings mention background checks than drug tests: on October 17, 2026, 49 of 3,832 said you must pass one, and 852 more carried a notice that people with arrest or conviction records will be considered. Those are two very different messages.
The 49 “must pass” postings are 44 at xAI, 4 at Nuro and 1 at Figure AI, a Staging Specialist role that says “Must be able to pass a background check.” One xAI events role asks candidates to pass an Air Force and NASA check.
The 852 notices are all 815 OpenAI postings and 37 at Physical Intelligence. OpenAI’s line, on postings such as its Technical Program Manager, Compute Infrastructure role, says background checks follow applicable law, including the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance.
A fair-chance notice tells you a check may happen and that a record is not an automatic no. The other 14 boards said nothing either way in their postings, which, again, is not the same as saying they never check.
Before you apply to a site or vehicle job
- Search the posting for “drug,” “screen” and “background” before you apply; in our read, the line sits near the end, under additional requirements or pre-employment qualifications.
- Look for the word “random.” 36 of the 37 xAI postings with test wording say testing continues after hire.
- If the posting is silent, ask the recruiter what the offer is contingent on. Get the answer in writing with the offer.
- Pay nothing to anyone for a test or a check. A legitimate employer arranges and pays for its own screening. Our Jobs Desk sources box lists the scam rules in full.
We are not recruiters, take no money from employers, and give no legal advice. Postings can close at any time; the official page wins.
Where can you read these postings yourself?
All 3,832 postings we read on October 17, 2026 are on our jobs board, where you can browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site, and the daily AI jobs tracker counts them by company. Each listing links to the employer’s page, where the full requirements text lives.
For the hands-on side, see robotics technician pay, whether robotics technicians need a degree, humanoid robot operator jobs and entry-level AI jobs with no experience.
For office roles, our company reads cover OpenAI, Anthropic and Figure AI. Other screening questions get their own counts: opting out of AI resume screening, degree or equivalent experience and what a salary range includes.
We will re-run this count in mid-November and note any board that adds or drops test wording. Not sure you fit a posting? Read whether to apply anyway, ask the Jobs Desk, or start at the Jobs Desk hub.
Does Waymo drug test?
None of Waymo’s 362 open postings mentioned a drug test when we read them on October 17, 2026. That covers the posting text only; Waymo’s hiring policy beyond the postings is not something we could check.
Does xAI drug test?
For some jobs. On October 17, 2026, 37 of xAI’s 305 postings, all data center, power and construction roles in Memphis and Southaven, said the job is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.
Does Nuro drug test?
For vehicle operators, yes. All 4 Nuro Autonomous Vehicle Operator postings we read on October 17, 2026 require passing a background check and drug test. Its other 104 postings did not mention one.
Do tech jobs drug test for weed?
Postings rarely say what a test screens for; none of the 41 we found on October 17, 2026 named cannabis. In California, Government Code section 12954 limits tests that detect only nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites, with exceptions for construction trades and clearance jobs.
Do IT companies do background checks?
Many mention them. On October 17, 2026, 49 of 3,832 AI company postings said you must pass a background check, and 852 carried a fair-chance notice that applicants with records will be considered.
