Is Mercor Jobs Legit? We Read All 286 Open Listings on Oct. 13, 2026, and None Asked You to Pay

Yes, Mercor is a real company that pays people for project work, and on October 13, 2026 none of the 286 open listings on its own marketplace asked applicants to pay a fee, buy anything or share bank details. The posted hourly ranges in 247 of those listings topped out at a median of $100 an hour. Legit does not mean simple, though: 232 of the 286 listings do not say which company the work is for, and Mercor disclosed a data breach in June 2026.

Mercor’s own help center is blunt on the money question: “Mercor never requests or requires any payment or fee from talents.” Anyone who asks you to pay in Mercor’s name is not Mercor.

What we checked on October 13, 2026

  • All 286 open listings on Mercor’s public marketplace at work.mercor.com/explore, read from the listing data the page itself serves: pay rate, pay type, location, category, client name field and full description.
  • All 111 postings on Mercor’s staff job board, read through Ashby’s public job-posting feed, the same feed behind our AI jobs tracker.
  • We searched every marketplace description for fees, deposits, bank details, gift cards, crypto, purchases, Telegram, WhatsApp and Social Security numbers, then read each hit by eye. None asked the applicant for money or banking details.
  • Mercor’s help center, terms, two company blog posts and federal court dockets were read the same day. We did not apply, sign up or take an interview.

Written and checked by Prof. H. An AI assistant helped draft this piece and run the page reads; every quote was read on the source’s own page on October 13, 2026.

Is Mercor a real company or a scam?

Mercor is a funded, operating company: its blog post published October 27, 2025 announced a $350 million Series C “at a $10 billion valuation,” led by Felicis with Benchmark, General Catalyst and Robinhood Ventures. Its terms of service, last updated August 26, 2026, name the contracting company as Mercor.io Corporation.

What Mercor sells is people. AI labs pay it to find doctors, lawyers, coders and language experts who write, grade and check training data for AI models. That is the same kind of work we covered in whether AI training jobs are legit, and close to what Scale AI and its Outlier platform do.

So the scam question is really two questions. Is Mercor itself a fraud? We found nothing that says so. Can a scammer use Mercor’s name to reach you? Yes, and the checks later in this piece are for that.

CNBC Television, “Mercor CEO on AI’s labor impact: There’s going to be a lot of new jobs created,” published January 23, 2026, 21,813 views when checked October 13, 2026. It is the chief executive’s own view; none of our counts come from it.

What are Mercor jobs, and who do you actually work for?

Mercor runs two separate job lists: 111 staff postings for jobs at Mercor itself, and 286 marketplace listings for project work done for Mercor’s clients, both counted on October 13, 2026. When people search “Mercor jobs,” the autocomplete suggestions point at the second kind: remote, hourly, legit-or-scam.

The two look nothing alike. Staff postings are salaried and almost all in an office; the only one marked remote is a grant program, not a job. Marketplace listings are the opposite: 271 of 286 are remote, 14 hybrid and 1 on site.

Comparison table of Mercor's two job lists on October 13, 2026. Staff board: jobs at Mercor itself, 111 postings, 109 with a pay line, 1 remote which is a grant program, hosted at jobs.ashbyhq.com/mercor. Contractor marketplace: work for unnamed clients in 232 listings, 286 listings, 247 hourly ranges and 39 other pay types, 271 remote, hosted at work.mercor.com/explore.

Marketplace pay comes in four kinds: 248 hourly, 27 per task, 8 one-time and 3 yearly. Mercor’s own labels for commitment are 162 hourly, 72 part-time, 30 task-based and 22 full-time. Of the 192 listings that state weekly hours, 144 say 40.

How much do Mercor jobs pay per hour?

Of the 247 marketplace listings that show an hourly rate on October 13, 2026, the top of the posted range had a median of $100 an hour and the bottom a median of $60. The lowest was $18 an hour, for a Hindi audio audit. The highest was $350 to $450 an hour, for an oncologist.

Top of each listing’s hourly range, grouped. 88 listings top out between $100 and $149 an hour.

The field you work in moves the number most. Medicine listings had the highest median top rate, $150 an hour across 19 listings. Language and audio listings had $50 across 38, and arts and design $45 across 12.

Bar chart of the median top-of-range hourly rate by Mercor listing category on October 13, 2026: Medicine 150 dollars, Finance 120, Life, Physical and Social Science 110, Business Operations 110, Law 110, Software Engineering 97.50, Other Engineering 85, Data Analysis 75, Miscellaneous 66, Language and Audio 50, Arts and Design 45.

A posted rate is not a weekly income. Listings describe projects that start and end, and none of the 286 promised a set number of weeks. Compare these figures with the part-time AI jobs you can do from home and the pay in xAI’s AI tutor postings.

Why do 232 of 286 Mercor listings leave the client unnamed?

On October 13, 2026, 232 of Mercor’s 286 marketplace listings had the client name switched off, and most of the other 54 showed a one-word label such as “Neon” (34 listings), “Boron” (6) or “Jade” (5). Only a handful named a body we could recognize, such as Pearson or a Stanford research study.

Typical wording is “a leading AI lab” or “a frontier AI research lab.” Mercor does not explain the practice on the listings we read. Our inference is that AI labs often do not want their training projects named; we could not confirm that from Mercor.

For a job seeker this is the part that feels like a scam, and it is worth saying plainly: you may not know who your work is for until after you are accepted. That is unusual for a job, but it is not the same as fraud. The test that matters is who pays you and how, covered below.

Why does every Mercor listing carry a referral bonus?

All 286 marketplace listings on October 13, 2026 carried a referral amount, with a median of $400 and a top of $2,000. The most common amounts were $250 (32 listings), $600 (26) and $440 (21).

This explains something readers see online. Many “Mercor job” links on social media and forums are referral links, posted by people who get paid if you sign up. That is our inference from the bonus data, not something we counted on those sites. A referral link is not proof of a scam, but the person sharing it has a reason to sound upbeat.

Open listings from the source instead: start at work.mercor.com, not at a link in a comment. The same rule applies to every employer in our jobs board, where you can browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site.

Is a Mercor “open application” a real job?

It is a waiting list, not a job: 62 of the 286 listings on October 13, 2026 were marked “evergreen,” and 52 of those use wording such as “open application for future contract opportunities” or “talent network.” One reads, “We match experts to opportunities on a rolling basis.”

Passing the steps puts you in a pool. Work comes only when a project needs your field. Listings also show how many seats are left: the median was 10, and 20 listings showed 1,000.

Age is another clue. 150 of the 286 listings were posted in September 2026 and 18 in October, while 28 were more than six months old. Our count of how long job postings stay up explains why an old date alone does not mean a dead listing.

What happens to your Mercor AI interview recording?

Mercor keeps it: its AI interview help page, read on October 13, 2026, says “We retain your video/audio recordings and an AI-generated transcript of official interviews to evaluate your candidacy and to recommend your profile to potential employers.” 53 of the 286 listings mention the AI interview.

The same page says most interviews take “approximately 20 minutes,” need a camera and microphone, and that “We do not sell your interview data.” Practice interviews are not shared with companies. Official ones can be retaken up to three times.

Deleting your account removes your resume, interview and transcript, according to Mercor’s data and AI usage page. That page also says it does not remove data that companies may already have accessed. If a face-and-voice recording worries you, read our piece on opting out of AI resume screening first.

Are Mercor workers employees or contractors?

Contractors, by Mercor’s own account: its help page on 1099 and W-2 status, read October 13, 2026, says “Mercor does not offer W2 positions, your work with us is not considered ‘employment.’” US workers get a 1099-NEC form, and you handle your own taxes.

The listings complicate that. 27 of the 286 describe the role as W-2 employment with a company called Cincinnatus LLC, most as full-time work placed at an AI lab. We could not confirm how Cincinnatus is related to Mercor, and Mercor’s help pages we read do not mention it. Ask before you sign which company employs you.

What went wrong at Mercor in 2026?

A data breach: Mercor’s security update, published June 25, 2026, says “In late March 2026, Mercor was affected by a supply chain attack involving LiteLLM,” and that of “nearly five million experts,” a limited subset had sensitive information affected. Notices went out June 25 and 26 with identity protection from TransUnion.

Seven lawsuits naming Mercor.io Corporation were filed in federal court in Northern California between April 1 and April 21, 2026, according to CourtListener dockets checked October 13, 2026. Their timing follows the breach. We did not read the complaints, so we make no claim about what they allege.

Separately, Scale AI sued Mercor in the same court on September 3, 2025 under the federal trade secrets law (case 3:25-cv-07402). Those are allegations, and we could not confirm the case’s current status. News reports of a 2025 pay cut on one Mercor project could not be checked against the original article, so we quote nothing from them.

Spotting a fake Mercor message takes five checks

Mercor’s pay page, read on October 13, 2026, says “All official communication from Mercor comes from email addresses ending in @mercor.com,” and that mail from another domain or a spelling variation “is not official.” Use that line as the first of five checks.

  1. Look at the sender. It should end in @mercor.com. An @mercor.expert address is the work account Mercor gives experts on active projects, not a recruiter address. The older @c-mercor.com addresses “can no longer be used.” One exception we found: Mercor’s update says its June 2026 breach notices came from mercor@notifications.cyberscout.com.
  2. Refuse any payment request. Mercor says it “does not issue any charges” and tells anyone asked to pay to contact their bank about a dispute.
  3. Do payment setup only on work.mercor.com. Mercor names that as its official site, and Stripe or Wise setup happens there, not in a chat app.
  4. Find the listing yourself. Search work.mercor.com/explore for the role you were offered. If it is not there, ask support@mercor.com before you do anything.
  5. Know the bigger pattern. The FTC said on March 10, 2025 that reported losses to job and employment agency scams jumped from $90 million in 2020 to $501 million in 2024.

The FTC also found, in a spotlight published April 27, 2026, that one in three people who lost money to a job or business opportunity scam in 2025 said it started on social media. Our guide to AI jobs for people over 50 covers the same warning signs.

CNBC Television, “Mercor CEO Brendan Foody on $2 billion valuation, streamlining hiring with AI,” published February 20, 2025, 35,449 views when checked October 13, 2026. The valuation in the title predates the 2025 Series C.

How we counted: the marketplace numbers come from the listing data served with the public page work.mercor.com/explore on October 13, 2026 (286 listings, all marked active). Hourly figures use each listing’s posted minimum and maximum rate; where only one rate is posted it counts as both. The staff numbers come from Ashby’s public posting feed for Mercor. We did not apply or sign in, so we cannot say how often applicants are accepted or how many hours they get.
