What Does Relocation Assistance Mean for a Job? 512 of 3,823 AI Job Postings Offered It (Oct. 23, 2026)

Relocation assistance means the employer helps pay for, or arranges, your move to take the job. On October 23, 2026, we read 3,823 job postings on 19 AI company boards and 512 of them, 13.4%, offered it; only one employer, Mercor, printed a dollar amount.

That gap is the useful part. A line like “we offer relocation assistance” tells you help exists, not how much, what it covers, or whether it is taxed. This piece shows the six ways the postings word it, what each wording commits the employer to, and what to ask before you sign.

What we read on October 23, 2026

  • 3,823 open jobs on the 19 boards behind our AI jobs tracker: OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Scale AI, Mercor, Perplexity, Cohere, Sierra, ElevenLabs, Cursor, Cognition, Replit, Figure AI, Apptronik, Agility Robotics, 1X, Physical Intelligence, Waymo and Nuro. The tracker’s 20th board, Google DeepMind’s US board, returned an error (HTTP 404) and is not counted.
  • We pulled the full text of every posting from the employers’ public Greenhouse and Ashby feeds and pulled out every sentence with “relocate,” “relocation,” “moving expenses” or “housing bonus.” 589 postings had at least one.
  • We read the sentences by eye and sorted each posting: offers help, asks you to move with no help named, or neither. Job duties such as “office relocations” or payroll tasks were dropped. A posting that offers help in words we did not search for could be missing, so treat 512 as a floor.
  • We did not apply to any job or contact any employer.

What does relocation assistance mean in a job posting?

It means the employer says it will help with the cost or logistics of moving for the job, and on October 23, 2026, 337 OpenAI postings put it in one line: “We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.” That sentence, from postings such as Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure, is the most common relocation line in our count.

Notice what it leaves out. It names no amount, no list of covered costs and no repayment terms. In plain terms, it is a promise that a conversation will happen, not the terms of that conversation. The terms arrive in the offer letter.

OpenAI also ties the move to office days. We counted those office-day rules in what hybrid means in a job posting, and the location limits on remote roles in why remote jobs have location requirements.

Which AI companies offered relocation help on October 23?

Six of the 19 boards offered relocation help in at least one posting on October 23, 2026, and three of them account for 498 of the 512 offers: OpenAI 337, Mercor 90 and Agility Robotics 71. The other 13 boards, including Cursor, Cohere and Scale AI, offered it in none of their postings.

Employer Postings offering help How the posting words it
OpenAI 337 of 802 (42%) “offer relocation assistance to new employees”; 3 say “eligible”
Mercor 90 of 112 (80%) “Up to $15k Relocation bonus”; 88 print an amount
Agility Robotics 71 of 71 (100%) “Provided for eligible roles”
Waymo 8 of 365 (2%) Housing or relocation bonus “(if applicable),” all summer 2027 interns
xAI 4 of 298 (1%) “may also be eligible for a stipend,” all interns
Anthropic 2 of 683 (under 1%) “Relocation support is available”
13 other boards 0 No relocation offer in any posting

Two patterns stand out. At Agility Robotics, all 71 postings carry the same benefits line, including jobs such as Buyer in Salem, Oregon, so “eligible roles” is doing the work. At Waymo and xAI, every posting that offered help was an internship. Waymo’s other 357 postings offered none.

Where do the moves point? 295 of the 512 postings that offered help list San Francisco among their locations, by our count of the location field. Our jobs board, where you can browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site, shows the same pull: most open US roles on these boards are in San Francisco.

How much is a relocation bonus at an AI company?

Only Mercor said, in 88 postings on October 23, 2026: up to $15,000 in most of them and $20,000 in two, with some lines tying the bonus to a move to the Bay Area or New York. The other 424 postings that offered help gave no figure, so any number you see quoted for OpenAI or Agility Robotics did not come from the posting.

Mercor’s Software Engineer, Systems & Platform Applied AI posting lists “Up to $15k Relocation bonus” next to a separate “$10K housing bonus (if you live within 0.5 miles of our office).” We counted that housing line in 78 Mercor postings. It is a different benefit: it pays you to live close, wherever you came from.

“Up to” is a ceiling, not a payment. A $15,000 cap can mean a lump sum, receipts reimbursed up to that amount, or a moving company paid directly. The posting does not say which. For more on how Mercor pays and recruits, see is Mercor legit.

Is relocation assistance taxable income?

For most civilian employees, yes: IRS Publication 15-B for 2026, last reviewed April 30, 2026, says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21) “permanently eliminates the exclusion for qualified moving expense reimbursements from your employee’s income.” The exclusion survives for active-duty military moving under orders and, the IRS says, for some intelligence community employees.

IRS Topic no. 455, last reviewed October 16, 2026, describes those two groups and no one else. We read no posting that said whether its payment is grossed up, meaning the employer adds money to cover the tax. One posting shows how payroll sees it: Cognition’s Payroll Operations Manager job lists “relocation payments” among “taxable benefits.”

Here is our arithmetic, not a figure from any posting. Publication 15-B says the withholding rate on supplemental wages remains 22%. On a $15,000 bonus, 22% is $3,300 of federal income tax withheld, leaving $11,700 before Social Security, Medicare and state tax. Withholding is not your final tax bill. This is not tax advice.

What does it mean when a job says willing to relocate?

It means the employer wants you near the office, not that it will pay for the move: on October 23, 2026, 42 postings asked candidates to live nearby or be willing to move and named no relocation help. xAI had 19 of them, 16 for jobs in Memphis or nearby Southaven, Mississippi, mostly construction managers and superintendents.

The wording is blunt in places. xAI’s Construction Manager, Electrical – Memphis posting says the job is in Memphis “with relocation required depending on additional construction locations within the US.” Cursor’s Creator Campaign Manager says “Based in, or willing to relocate to, San Francisco; in-person.” Neither line mentions help with the cost. We covered xAI’s Memphis pay in xAI Memphis jobs and salary.

Anthropic is the softer case. Six of its postings say “we encourage you to apply even if you might need some flexibility for an interim period of time for relocation,” as in Field Marketing Lead, Public Sector. That is flexibility on timing, not money. Two other Anthropic postings, such as Economic Mobility Partnerships Manager, do offer “relocation support.”

What should you ask before you accept relocation help?

Ask for the terms in writing, because none of the relocation sentences in the 3,823 postings we read on October 23, 2026 named a repayment rule, a covered-cost list or a tax gross-up. Those three are where moves go wrong.

We are not career counselors or tax advisers. These are the five gaps the 512 offers left open:

  1. How much, and in what form? Lump sum, reimbursement against receipts, or a moving company booked for you. Only Mercor printed a number.
  2. What costs count? Movers, flights, temporary housing, a lease break. The postings listed none.
  3. Is it grossed up for tax? Without a gross-up, IRS rules mean the payment is taxable income for most civilian workers.
  4. Do you repay it if you leave early, and over what period? Ask for the clause itself.
  5. Does “eligible” include your role? Agility Robotics, OpenAI and xAI used that word. Ask before you plan the move.

Relocation money is part of the package, so weigh it beside the salary. Our pieces on whether the salary range includes bonus and equity, why salary ranges are so wide and what to put for desired salary show what else the posted range leaves out.

We are not recruiters. We take no money from employers, and postings can close at any time; the employer’s official page wins. Never pay to apply, never deposit a check and send money back, a text message is not a job offer, and apply only on the employer’s own site. A “relocation advance” that asks you to forward money is a scam pattern; more at the Jobs Desk sources.

A local news segment and a career coach on moving for work

CBS 17’s relocation segment had 205 views and Benjamin Preston’s relocation package video had 30,903 when we checked on October 23, 2026. Neither is about AI companies. The first is a short local TV piece on getting a new job to help with moving costs; the second is a career coach’s longer walk-through of deciding whether to relocate.

CBS 17, “Relocation assistance,” published October 17, 2024; 205 views when checked October 23, 2026. Its description asks how to make sure a new job helps with relocation expenses.

Does relocation assistance get taxed?

For most civilian workers, yes. IRS Publication 15-B for 2026 says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act permanently eliminates the exclusion for moving expense reimbursements, except for active-duty military and some intelligence community employees.

What does no relocation assistance mean?

It means the employer will not pay for your move, so the cost is yours. On October 23, 2026, 42 AI job postings asked candidates to live near the office or be willing to move and named no help with the cost.

How much is a typical relocation bonus?

Most postings do not say. Of 512 AI job postings that offered relocation help on October 23, 2026, only 88 printed an amount, all at Mercor: up to 15,000 dollars in most, 20,000 dollars in two.

Does relocation assistance cover rent?

Not by default. The postings we read named moving help, not rent. Mercor was the exception: 78 postings offered a separate 10,000 dollar housing bonus if you live within 0.5 miles of the office.

Do you have to pay back relocation assistance if you quit?

Sometimes, and the job posting will not tell you. None of the relocation sentences in 3,823 AI job postings read on October 23, 2026 mentioned repayment, so ask for the repayment terms in the written offer.
