What Does Contract to Hire Mean? 6 of 3,811 AI Job Postings Used the Term (Oct. 22, 2026)

Contract to hire means you start on a contract, with an end date and often without employee benefits, and the employer may then hire you as a regular employee. On October 22, 2026, we read 3,811 job postings on 19 AI company boards and 6 used the words “contract-to-hire”; all 6 were hourly robot operator jobs at Figure AI paying $26 to $35 an hour.

None of those 6 postings says how long the contract lasts or when the switch to a regular job happens. That gap is the part most people searching this term want filled, so this piece shows what the postings do say, word for word, and the questions they leave for you to ask.

What we read on October 22, 2026

  • 3,811 open jobs on the 19 boards behind our AI jobs tracker: OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Scale AI, Mercor, Perplexity, Cohere, Sierra, ElevenLabs, Cursor, Cognition, Replit, Figure AI, Apptronik, Agility Robotics, 1X, Physical Intelligence, Waymo and Nuro. The tracker’s 20th board, Google DeepMind’s US board, returned an error (HTTP 404) and is not counted.
  • We pulled the full text of every posting from the employers’ public Greenhouse and Ashby feeds and searched it twice: once for exact terms (contract-to-hire, temp-to-hire, conversion, W-2, 1099, staffing agency) and once for any sentence calling the job temporary, fixed-term, freelance or a contract. We also read each board’s employment-type field where it has one.
  • We read every matched sentence by eye and dropped false matches, such as “Contracts Manager” job titles and a marketing posting about “pipeline conversion.” A posting that describes a contract in words we did not search for could be missing, so treat our counts as a floor.
  • We did not apply to any job or contact any employer.

What does contract to hire mean in a job posting?

It means the job begins as a contract and is meant to become a regular job later; Figure AI’s six postings on October 22, 2026 put it as “a contract-to-hire position with the goal of transitioning to full-time employment.” “Goal” is the important word. It is a plan, not a promise.

The postings mix two ideas that are easy to confuse. “Full-time” describes your hours. “Contract” describes who employs you and for how long. The same Figure postings say the base pay range “for this full-time position is $30.00 per hour,” so a job can be full-time hours and still be a contract.

The six were Humanoid Robot Operator (Morning Shift), the afternoon and night shift versions in San Jose, two Commercial Site Team operator jobs in Los Angeles and Reno, and a Fleet Launch Operator. We wrote about what these operators do in humanoid robot operator jobs and about the company in is Figure AI hiring.

How many AI job postings were contract to hire on October 22?

Six of 3,811, or 0.16%, used the term, and 56 of 3,811, 1.5%, were contract, temporary, fixed-term or freelance jobs of any kind on October 22, 2026. The other 98.5% read as regular jobs. Another 11 xAI AI Tutor postings said the role “may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions,” so we left them out of the 56.

We sorted the 56 by what each posting says happens when the term ends. Only 9 named any route to a regular job: the 6 Figure contract-to-hire jobs plus 3 that said the role may convert. Those 3 were Figure’s Staging Specialist, Sierra’s Office Coordinator in San Francisco and Scale AI’s Support Specialist in Mexico City.

What the posting says about the end Postings Employers
“Contract-to-hire,” goal of full-time employment 6 Figure AI
May convert to full-time 3 Figure AI, Sierra, Scale AI
“Potential for longer-term opportunities” 5 Figure AI
May be extended 11 Scale AI 10, Agility Robotics 1
Nothing about what comes after 31 Nuro, ElevenLabs, Scale AI, Sierra, Cohere and 5 more

The largest group with no stated path was Nuro’s: five Autonomous Vehicle Operator postings in San Francisco and Los Angeles, each a “12-month temporary assignment” at $26 to $28.25 an hour. ElevenLabs had five freelance postings, all outside the United States. You can browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site from our jobs board.

Who employs you before the switch to a regular job?

It depends on the posting, and the six Figure contract-to-hire postings we read on October 22, 2026 do not say. We searched their full text for “agency,” “staffing” and “third-party” and found none of the three words. Whether you would be on Figure’s payroll or a staffing firm’s during the contract is not confirmed in the postings.

Other postings spell it out. OpenAI’s Recruiting Coordinator – Contract job says the role “will be employed and paid through our third-party staffing agency.” Two Anthropic fellowships say fellows are engaged through an employer of record “rather than employed directly by Anthropic.” Fourteen Scale AI fellowship postings call themselves “1099 independent contractor” work.

The difference matters for taxes. The IRS page “Independent contractor (self-employed) or employee?”, last reviewed May 19, 2026, says the answer turns on control and sorts the evidence into three groups: behavioral, financial and type of relationship. A contractor paid on a 1099 form generally handles their own taxes; an employee on a W-2 has tax withheld.

Do contract and temporary jobs at AI companies come with benefits?

Some say yes, some say no, and the contract-to-hire ones hedge: on October 22, 2026, Nuro’s five temporary operator postings said “plus benefits,” while Sierra’s contract Office Coordinator posting said it is “ineligible for the benefits listed below.” Read the benefits line before you compare hourly pay.

Cohere’s three part-time data annotation postings in Canada say independent contractors “are not eligible for health benefits or other benefits provided to employees” and that “continuous work is not guaranteed.” Sierra’s 12-month Technical Recruiter posting says not all listed benefits “apply to fixed-term opportunities.”

Figure’s six contract-to-hire postings say the total package “may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role.” That sentence does not tell you whether health insurance starts on day one of the contract. It is a question to ask the recruiter in writing.

How long before a contract to hire job turns permanent?

None of the 9 postings that named a route to a regular job on October 22, 2026 gave a date or a number of months for the switch. Two gave a contract length: Sierra’s Office Coordinator is a 6-month contract that “may be extended or converted to full-time,” and Scale AI’s Support Specialist has an “estimated six-month term.”

Scale AI’s wording shows who decides: conversion “may be considered at the company’s discretion, based on performance and business needs.” Figure’s Staging Specialist uses the same two reasons. In plain terms, the employer keeps the choice, and the postings name no target you can measure yourself against.

The Figure contract-to-hire postings for the three San Jose shifts do give one time figure: “a 2–3 week training process at company headquarters.” Five other Figure jobs are six-month fixed-term agreements “with potential for longer-term opportunities.” Those five do not use the word contract-to-hire, though in practice they describe a similar trial period. That last point is our reading, not the postings’ words.

Is a contract to hire position worth it for you?

It can be, if the gaps the posting leaves are filled in writing before you start; at $30 an hour, the rate on three of the six Figure contract-to-hire postings on October 22, 2026, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks comes to $62,400 a year before tax. That is our arithmetic, not a figure in any posting, and it assumes no unpaid weeks.

We are not career counselors, and this is not legal or tax advice. These are the five things the 56 postings most often left out, so they are the five to ask about:

  1. Who is the employer during the contract? The company, a staffing agency or an employer of record. OpenAI’s contract posting names an agency; Figure’s do not.
  2. W-2 or 1099? Ask which form you will get. A 1099 contractor generally pays self-employment tax; see the IRS page.
  3. Which benefits start on day one? Health insurance, paid time off and overtime rules can differ during the contract.
  4. How long is the contract, and when is the decision made? None of the 9 postings with a path gave a date.
  5. What does the regular job pay? Ask whether the hourly rate, title or bonus and equity change after conversion.

One honest limit: postings tell us what employers promise on paper. They do not tell us how many contract workers were later hired. None of the 3,811 postings gave a conversion rate.

We are not recruiters. We take no money from employers, and postings can close at any time; the employer’s official page wins. Never pay to apply, never deposit a check and send money back, a text message is not a job offer, and apply only on the employer’s own site. Contract and remote work offers are a common scam cover; more at the Jobs Desk sources and in are AI training jobs legit.

Figure’s F.03 video and a staffing firm on the trade-offs

Figure’s official “F.03 at BMW” video had 176,228 views and 4 Corner Resources’ contract-to-hire explainer had 3,425 when we checked on October 22, 2026. The first shows the kind of robot Figure’s operators work with. The second is from a staffing company, which sells contract-to-hire placements, so weigh it with that in mind.

Is contract to hire a real job?

Yes, it is paid work, but it starts as a contract rather than a regular job. On October 22, 2026, six Figure AI robot operator postings used the term and called full-time employment the goal, not a guarantee.

Is contract to hire W2 or 1099?

It can be either, so ask. On October 22, 2026, an OpenAI contract job said it pays through a staffing agency, fourteen Scale AI fellowships said 1099 contractor, and the six Figure contract-to-hire postings did not say.

How long is a contract to hire period?

The postings we read did not say. On October 22, 2026, none of the 9 AI company postings that named a route to a regular job gave a date for the switch. Contract lengths we did see ran from 3 to 12 months.

What does 6 month contract to hire mean?

Usually a six-month contract after which the employer decides whether to hire you. On October 22, 2026, Sierra and Scale AI each had a six-month contract that may convert to a regular job.

Do contract to hire workers get benefits?

Not always during the contract. On October 22, 2026, a Sierra contract posting said it was ineligible for listed benefits, Cohere said contractors get no health benefits, and Nuro temporary postings said plus benefits.
