Can Two People Use the Same ChatGPT Account? No, and There Is No Family Plan
No: on October 19, 2026 we read OpenAI’s Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, and they say you “may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else.” We found no ChatGPT family plan on OpenAI’s pages. We checked the account rules of 4 AI services, and 3 of the 4 keep their AI to one person; only Google lets AI benefits reach family members.
If you and your spouse have been taking turns on one login, you are far from alone, and nobody is coming to scold you. This guide explains what the rule says, what goes wrong when two people share, and what 2 separate accounts cost, from $0 a month and up.
What we checked on October 19, 2026
We read OpenAI’s Terms of Use and 6 OpenAI Help Center articles (account sharing, memory, parental controls, ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Go), Anthropic’s Consumer Terms and Claude pricing page, Microsoft’s page on AI credits, 2 Google One help pages, and Apple’s page on using ChatGPT on iPhone.
Our own count: 4 AI services, 0 that allow a second person on one login, 3 that keep AI to the account owner, 1 (Google AI Pro) that shares “select AI benefits” with up to 5 family members. The monthly cost table is our own math from those prices. We did not sign in to any account or test what happens when two people share one; nothing here is legal advice.
Written and checked by Prof. H. An AI assistant helped draft this article and ran the page reads; every quote was read on the source’s own page on the date shown.

Can two people use the same ChatGPT account?
Not under OpenAI’s rules: the Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026 and read October 19, 2026, forbid making “your account available to anyone else” and make you “responsible for all activities that occur under your account.” That covers a husband, a wife, a grown child or a friend.
OpenAI’s Help Center page “OpenAI Account Sharing Policy” puts it in plainer words: “Your OpenAI account is meant for you—the individual who created it.” It adds that anyone else who wants to use ChatGPT “should sign up for their own account.”
Think of it like a library card. The whole family can go to the same library, but each person carries a card with their own name on it, and the books they borrow show up on their own record.
Is it fine to use my own account on my phone and my computer?
Yes. The same OpenAI page says “You are welcome to use your OpenAI account on multiple devices,” with a note that usage limits may apply. The rule is about people, not gadgets. One person on a phone, a tablet and a laptop is fine; two people on one login is not.
Is there a ChatGPT family plan?
No: none of the 6 OpenAI Help Center articles we read on October 19, 2026 describes a family plan, and the ChatGPT Business overview says Business “workspaces require 2 Standard or Premium ChatGPT seats,” so the smallest shared option is a 2-seat work plan.
Here is what OpenAI’s Help Center listed on October 19, 2026:
- ChatGPT Plus: the “What is ChatGPT Plus?” article gives the price as “$20/month (billed monthly).”
- ChatGPT Business: standard seats are $25 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 per user per month billed yearly. Premium seats are $125 or $100.
- Free, Go and Pro: each is a plan for one person. We did not confirm US dollar prices for Go and Pro on the day we checked, so we leave them out.
Business is built for a company, with an admin and shared workspace. For a couple at home, 2 personal accounts are simpler. The one real “family” feature is parental controls, which we cover below.

What happens to memory and chat history when a couple shares one login?
They can get mixed: OpenAI’s “Memory in ChatGPT” help page, updated in the past 30 days and read October 19, 2026, says that when Memory is on, ChatGPT “can remember relevant preferences and details from your chats and other available sources.” On a shared login, by our reading, “your chats” means both people’s chats.
The page lists the sources Memory can draw on, depending on plan and region:
- past chats
- saved memories
- custom instructions
- files in Library
- content from connected apps, such as Gmail
So if you ask about your blood pressure pills and your husband later asks for a dinner idea, ChatGPT may weigh what it remembers from your question. If one of you has connected an email account, the other person’s chats can draw on it too. That is our reading of how the page describes Memory, not a test we ran.
Turning Memory off does not fix this. The same page says turning off Memory “does not delete your past chats.” Anyone on the login can still open the sidebar and read every conversation. For privacy between two people, separate accounts are the only clean answer.
A shared password puts the payment card at risk too
OpenAI’s sharing page, read October 19, 2026, lists 3 reasons sharing is not allowed, and the first is that “Sharing login credentials can expose your personal data and payment information.” A paid Plus account has a card attached, and whoever has the password can reach the account settings.
A shared login also makes scam messages harder to spot. Picture a text that says your ChatGPT account will be closed unless you send back a code. When two people only half-remember who set up the account, it is easy to believe. Never read a login code to anyone who contacts you. Sign in through the app you already use instead.
OpenAI’s page also says to change your password and turn on two-factor authentication if you see activity you do not recognize. Two-factor sign-in is much easier to manage when only one person holds the phone that receives the codes.

How much do two people pay to use ChatGPT the allowed way?
From $0 to $50 a month: by our math from OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s prices read October 19, 2026, 2 free accounts cost $0, 2 ChatGPT Plus accounts cost $40 a month, and a 2-seat ChatGPT Business or Claude Team plan costs $50 a month billed monthly. No ChatGPT family discount exists, so there is no family price to compare.

| Option for 2 people | Per month | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 2 free ChatGPT accounts | $0 | Couples who use AI a few times a week |
| 1 Plus + 1 free account | $20 | One heavy user, one light user |
| 2 ChatGPT Plus accounts | $40 | Both people hit free limits often |
| ChatGPT Business, 2 seats | $50 ($40 billed yearly) | A small family business, not a household |
The second row is the one many couples miss. The person who uses AI every day pays $20, the other stays on the free plan, and each keeps a private chat history. That costs the same $20 as one shared Plus login, without breaking the terms.
Which AI subscription can actually be shared with family?
Google AI Pro is the only one of the 4 we checked: Google One Help, read October 19, 2026, says “Family plan members on a Google AI Pro membership plan can enjoy select AI benefits and features at no extra cost,” and another Google page says you can share Google One “with up to 5 family members.”
Even here, nobody shares a login. Google’s family page says that to join a family group you need to “Have a Google Account” and live in the same country as the family manager, and the manager must be 18 or older. It also says family members cannot find your photos or files unless you share them directly.
The word “select” matters. Google’s benefits page names some perks that stay with the plan manager, such as YouTube Premium Lite. Check the list before you count on a benefit for everyone.
Microsoft is the trap. Microsoft’s page on AI credits, last updated October 2026, lists Microsoft 365 Family among the plans with AI features, then says “AI benefits are only available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with others.” By that page, the other people on a Family plan do not get its Copilot AI benefits.
Claude follows the same rule as ChatGPT. Anthropic’s Consumer Terms, effective October 8, 2025, say “You also may not make your Account available to anyone else.” The Claude pricing page lists a Team plan “For teams of 2 to 150” at $25 per seat billed monthly, and no family plan.

Grandchildren get their own account, linked to yours through parental controls
OpenAI’s parental controls page, updated in the past week and read October 19, 2026, says “One parent or guardian can link accounts with multiple teens. Each teen can link to only one parent or guardian at a time.” The teen keeps their own login; the adult manages settings from theirs.
Linking is not spying. The page says it “does not give a parent or guardian access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity.” The page says the adult can manage selected settings, set schedules and get safety notifications in limited situations. The steps are on the same page:
- Open Settings from your profile menu in ChatGPT.
- Select Parental controls.
- Select Add family member.
- Choose Use phone or Use email, enter the teen’s number or address, and select Send.
OpenAI’s Terms of Use set the minimum age at 13 and say users under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission. Our full walk-through is in how to set up parental controls on ChatGPT.
On an iPhone, a spouse can try ChatGPT without any account
Apple’s iPhone User Guide page “Turn on ChatGPT on iPhone,” read October 19, 2026, says you can “Choose whether to sign in with a ChatGPT account,” and that “If you want your requests saved to your ChatGPT chat history, you must be signed in.” Without signing in, nothing lands in anyone’s ChatGPT history.
That makes it a gentle first step for a partner who is curious but not ready to sign up. Apple’s page says it needs a supported iPhone with Apple Intelligence, and that usage limits may apply. If your iPhone does not show the option, the free ChatGPT app with its own account is the next step.

Wife, husband, Plus and Pro: short answers to the exact searches
Can I share my ChatGPT account with my wife?
Not under OpenAI’s rules. The Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, say you may not make your account available to anyone else. Your wife can open her own free account, and you can keep Plus on yours if only you need it.
Can two people use the same ChatGPT account at the same time?
The question of timing does not change the answer. OpenAI’s sharing page allows one person on many devices, but a second person is not allowed at any time. The page gives no number of devices or simultaneous sessions.
Can I share ChatGPT Plus with family?
No. Plus is a one-person plan at $20 a month, per OpenAI’s Help Center on October 19, 2026. Family members can each use a free account, and a teen can be linked to your account through parental controls.
Does ChatGPT have a family plan?
No. None of the OpenAI Help Center pages we read on October 19, 2026 describes one. The smallest plan for more than one person is ChatGPT Business, which needs at least 2 seats at $25 each a month, or $20 billed yearly.
Can I share my ChatGPT Pro account?
No. The same rule covers every personal plan, including Pro: the Terms of Use say you may not make your account available to anyone else. Each person needs a separate account.
Can you family share Gemini Pro?
Yes, in part. Google One Help says family plan members on Google AI Pro can enjoy select AI benefits at no extra cost, with up to 5 family members. Each member signs in with their own Google Account.
