Is the xAI AI Tutor Job Legit? We Read All 28 Open Postings (Sept. 2026)
Short answer: yes, the xAI AI tutor job is real — and on September 17, 2026 there were 28 of them, every one on xAI’s own Greenhouse board with the pay printed. Twenty-one are language roles paying $35–$45 an hour in the US; the other seven run up to $75 or $100 for writing, design, video, software and legal specialists. The risk is not the job. It is the people pretending to hire for it, and a list that has shrunk by a third in less than four weeks.
We read all 28 postings line by line this morning, rather than trusting the summary fields a job site shows you. Here is what they actually ask for, what they pay, what the hours look like, and how to tell the real thing from a copy.
What does an AI tutor do at xAI?
Despite the title, you are not teaching people. You are teaching Grok, xAI’s model. Every posting describes the same core loop: use xAI’s own software to label, annotate, record or correct material so the model learns what good output looks like. The postings are now written under the name SpaceXAI, which is also how the company signs them.
What changes is the material:
- Language tutors (21 postings) work on audio. The Spanish posting asks for native proficiency, English at B2 or better, “clear, natural vocal delivery,” and accurate transcription across accents and noisy recordings. You will be asked to record your own voice.
- Writing critiques and rewrites AI-generated text in a specialty. The bar is high: a creative fiction applicant needs two of five credentials, such as a Big Five publishing deal or novel sales above 50,000 units. Technical and game writers need five years of professional work.
- Video and Video (Weekend) want a portfolio of edited work and fluency in tools like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or After Effects.
- Software Engineering asks for professional engineering experience; Legal & Compliance requires a J.D. and at least two years in practice.
How much does xAI pay AI tutors?
Every one of the 28 postings prints a US hourly range, which already puts them ahead of most listings in this space. The spread is narrower than headlines suggest. Three in four open postings sit in a single band, $35 to $45 an hour. Only two reach $100, and both demand a profession first.

All 28 postings read on xAI’s own Greenhouse board on September 17, 2026. “First posted” is the board’s original publish date; xAI refreshes the update stamp on every posting almost daily, so a fresh-looking date does not mean a new job. International pay is not printed on any of them.
For international candidates every posting says the same thing: pay information “will be provided to you during the recruitment process.” The US benefits line, where it applies, lists health insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid sick leave for eligible positions. Whether you get those depends on the employment type you are offered, which is the next thing to understand. Is it full-time, part-time or contract?
All three, and you do not choose. All 28 postings carry the same sentence: tutor roles “may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions, depending on role needs and candidate fit.” For contractors, 27 of the 28 add that most projects involve at least 10 hours a week, that this is not a fixed commitment, and that contractors set their own hours.
The one exception is Video (Weekend), posted on September 14. It has set hours on Saturday and Sunday, and its full-time version runs Saturday through Wednesday or Thursday through Monday. If you want weekday evenings only, that is the posting to skip.

Who can apply, and from where?
Every posting is listed as “Remote International” and says the work can be done from anywhere, subject to legal eligibility and time zones. Three conditions appear in all 28:
- Not Wyoming or Illinois. xAI states it is unable to hire in those two states at this time.
- No visa sponsorship. You need existing permission to work where you live.
- Your own computer: a Chromebook, a Mac on macOS 11 or later, or Windows 10 or later.
Nothing in any posting mentions age, and none requires a degree except the legal track. That makes the language tracks one of the few genuinely open doors for bilingual adults, including readers we wrote for in AI jobs for people over 50 and AI jobs that do not require coding.
The part nobody else is tracking: the list is shrinking
Because we snapshot 20 AI company boards every morning, we can watch this one job family over time. On August 22 there were 43 tutor postings on xAI’s board. Today there are 28. Over the same 26 days, the 20 boards together grew from 3,652 roles to 3,820.
Twenty-two tutor titles closed in that window, including Korean, Italian, Czech, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu, and the Physics, Pure Math and Statistics tutor roles. Seven appeared or were renamed, among them Design, Humanities and the weekend video role. The practical meaning: if your language is not in the table above, do not wait for it. So why do people ask whether it is legit?
Because “get paid to train AI from home” is exactly what scammers now say. The FTC reported more than 105,000 job-scam reports in 2024, about three times the 2020 level, with losses above $513 million. Reports of “task scams” — fake gig work that asks you to deposit money to unlock pay — went from zero in 2020 to about 5,000 in 2023 and roughly 20,000 in the first half of 2024 alone (FTC, December 2024).
A real xAI tutor job and a fake one can use identical words. What differs is everything around the words.

- Find your track in the table and open it from there, not from a search result or a message.
- Language applicants: prepare to record your voice and transcribe noisy audio. Test your microphone first.
- Writing, video and software applicants: have the portfolio link or proof of credentials ready before you start the form.
- If you live in Wyoming or Illinois, or need a visa, these postings are closed to you as written.
