Why Do Entry Level Jobs Require Experience? 43 of 56 AI Technician Postings Asked for Years on Oct. 14, 2026

On October 14, 2026, 43 of 56 U.S. technician postings on 19 AI company job boards asked for a set number of years of experience, with a median of 2 years, while only 3 of 15 postings labeled “new grad” or “early career” named any number at all. So the short answer is that “entry level” rarely means zero experience. In many of these postings, years of experience are offered as a swap for a degree, and internships, coursework and trade training often count.

That pattern runs against the federal profile for the same kind of work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists “None” for related work experience on its page for electro-mechanical and mechatronics technicians. The employers we read mostly asked for two or three years anyway.

What we checked on October 14, 2026

  • The full text of all 3,808 open postings on 19 AI, robotics and self-driving company boards, read through the public Greenhouse and Ashby job feeds that power our AI jobs tracker.
  • We pulled every posting whose title says intern, co-op, new grad, early career, junior, entry level or technician, then removed senior, lead and manager titles from the technician group.
  • For each posting we found every sentence that names a number of years of experience and read the heading above it, so a “nice to have” line is not counted as a requirement. We read the matched sentences by eye.
  • Two Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook pages, both last modified August 27, 2026, were read the same day. We did not apply to any job or contact any employer.

Why do entry level jobs require experience?

Several of the 56 U.S. technician postings we read on October 14, 2026 treat experience as a substitute for a degree, which suggests it works as proof you have already handled the tools. That second part is our reading; the swap itself is in the posting text.

xAI’s Chiller Technician posting in Memphis asks for a “Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical or 2+ years of hands-on operations/facilities work experience in lieu of degree.” Agility Robotics’ Engineering Support Technician asks for an associate degree “and/or 3 years equivalent work experience.” In both, the years are an alternative door, not an extra hurdle.

Career sites that rank for this question give other reasons: training costs, big applicant piles and copied job templates. Those may be true at many employers, but they are explanations, not counts. We could not check them against the postings, so we treat them as context, and the numbers below are only what the posting text says.

Table comparing job titles with posting text on October 14, 2026. New grad or early career: 15 postings, 3 name a number of years (1, 1 and 5). Intern or co-op: 92 postings, 3 name a number. Technician, not senior: 56 U.S. postings, 43 name a number, median 2. Bureau of Labor Statistics profile for mechatronics technicians: related experience none.

How many years do entry-level AI technician jobs ask for?

Two years is the median: of the 43 U.S. technician postings that named a minimum on October 14, 2026, 3 asked for 1 year, 19 for 2 years, 19 for 3 years, 1 for 5 and 1 for 7. That means 41 of 43 sit between one and three years. Another 13 postings named no number at all.

The 56 postings came from seven companies. xAI had 26, almost all at its Memphis-area data center and power sites, and 25 of them named years. 1X had 14 with 8 naming years. Figure AI had 5, Physical Intelligence and OpenAI 4 each, Nuro 2 and Agility Robotics 1.

Bar chart of minimum years of experience in 56 U.S. technician postings on 7 AI and robotics company boards, October 14, 2026: no number of years 13, 1 year 3, 2 years 19, 3 years 19, 5 years 1, 7 years 1. Median 2 years.

Company Technician postings (U.S.) Name a number of years Range of minimums
xAI 26 25 1 to 3 years
1X 14 8 2 to 3 years
Figure AI 5 4 3 to 5 years
Physical Intelligence 4 4 2 years
OpenAI 4 1 7 years
Nuro 2 0 none named
Agility Robotics 1 1 3 years

A typical line reads like xAI’s IT Services Technician in Seattle: “2-4 years of experience in IT, helpdesk, or a related technical role,” for a posted range of $68,400 to $102,600. The 7-year outlier is OpenAI’s Datacenter Networking Technician for its Stargate build-out, posted at $157,000 to $302,000. That one is a technician only in name.

The low end is real, too. xAI’s Plumbing Technician in Memphis asks for “1+ year of plumbing experience.” For pay across these roles, our robotics technician pay count and data center electrician pay check go further.

Do jobs labeled new grad ask for experience too?

Mostly not in years: only 3 of the 15 postings titled “new grad” or “early career” on October 14, 2026 named a number, and two of those three were 1 year. What they asked for instead was proof of work, and 8 of the 15 mention internships somewhere in the text.

Nuro’s New Grad Software Engineer posting is the plainest: “new grad / early-career candidates welcome, no professional experience required.” It still wants experience “through coursework, internships, or personal projects” with React and TypeScript or server-side systems.

Perplexity’s early-career posting asks for “1+ years of professional software engineering experience, or a track record of strong internships where you shipped production code at scale.” Its posted range is $180,000 to $270,000 in San Francisco.

The 5-year outlier is Waymo’s Machine Learning Engineer posting marked “PhD, New Grad,” which asks for “5+ years of experience in Machine Learning.” The posting does not say whether doctoral research counts toward those years. Our reading is that it likely does, but that is an inference we could not confirm.

CNBC, “Why Job Listing Qualifications Feel Absurd,” published May 9, 2024, 703,612 views when checked October 14, 2026. It covers the hiring side broadly; none of our counts come from it.

Does an internship count as experience on a job application?

In 4 of the new-grad postings we read on October 14, 2026, an internship is named outright as the experience that counts. Scale AI’s four New Grad software postings list “Previous Product/Software Engineering internship experience” in the requirements block, above the nice-to-have list.

Cursor’s New Grad 2027 posting says “internships or equivalent industry experience welcome.” Perplexity, as quoted above, accepts strong internships in place of a year of work. So for software new-grad roles at these companies, an internship is not just allowed on the resume; it is often what the line is asking for.

On the technician side, the swap is training rather than internships. Nuro’s two Associate Fleet Technician postings ask for “Proven experience (e.g., from an academic program, vocational training, or professional role)” with vehicles, electronics or machinery. 1X’s Softgoods Development Technician posting says “0-3 (internships, vocational training, apprenticeships, or relevant personal projects count).”

OpenAI’s Site Operations Technician posting accepts “an Associate’s degree, technical certification, military experience, or equivalent practical experience.” None of those three names a minimum number of years, which is part of why they sit in the 13 with no number.

If you are deciding whether to send an application anyway, our count of which AI companies tell you to apply without every box checked covers that question with the posting text.

Why would a technician job ask for years when the government lists none?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in a page last modified August 27, 2026, lists “None” for related work experience for electro-mechanical and mechatronics technicians, an associate degree as typical entry education and a May 2025 median pay of $73,900. Its computer support specialists page also lists “None,” with moderate-term on-the-job training.

Those are national, typical-entry profiles across all employers. The postings we read are 56 openings at seven well-funded AI and robotics companies, many tied to fast data center build-outs. A company racing to bring a site online has a reason to want someone who already knows chillers or fiber. That last point is our inference from the posting locations, not something the employers say.

So the gap is less a contradiction than a mismatch of samples. The BLS describes the typical door into the occupation. These boards show what a handful of high-paying employers ask at one moment. For the wider field, the BLS profile is the better guide.

When does experience replace a degree in these postings?

Of the 56 U.S. technician postings we read on October 14, 2026, 17 mention a high school diploma, and 15 of those 17 also name a number of years. That is the clearest trade on these boards: a diploma plus a couple of years of hands-on work, instead of a four-year degree.

1X’s Electrical Harness Technician posting puts it in one line: “High school diploma or equivalent, with 2-3+ years of direct experience in wire harness fabrication and assembly.” xAI’s Chiller Technician, quoted earlier, offers years “in lieu of degree.” Our earlier piece on what “bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience” means counts how often that swap appears across all roles.

For readers changing careers later in life, this is the useful part. Years from a trade, the military or a repair shop are the kind of experience these technician postings describe. Our guide to AI jobs for people over 50 and our list of AI jobs that do not require coding pick up from there.

What can you do this week if a posting asks for two years you do not have?

Start by reading the line under the heading, because on October 14, 2026 most new-grad postings we read accepted internships or projects and most technician postings accepted a diploma plus trade years. Then match what you have to the exact words.

  1. Find the heading. A years line under “Nice to have” or “Bonus points” is not a requirement. Under “Basic qualifications” or “Minimum requirements,” it is.
  2. Count every kind of hands-on time. Internships, co-ops, military service, vocational programs and repair work are the examples these postings themselves name.
  3. Use the posting’s own words on your resume. If it says “wire harness fabrication,” and you did that, write those words, with dates.
  4. Look for the 13 that name no years. Our jobs board lets you browse every open role and apply on the employer’s site; filter by technician.
  5. Check the date before you invest an evening. Our count of how long job postings stay up shows why an older posting may already be filled.

We are not recruiters, we take no money from employers, and postings can close any time — the official page wins. Never pay to apply, never deposit a check and send money back, a text message is not a job offer, and apply only on the employer’s own site. More on checking a job before you apply.

What else do people ask about entry-level experience requirements?

Is 2 years of experience still entry level?

On the AI technician postings we read on October 14, 2026, yes in practice: 2 years was the median minimum, and 41 of 43 postings that named a number asked for 1 to 3 years. Titles with senior, lead or manager were left out of that count.

Does an internship count as experience on a job application?

Often, for new-grad roles. Scale AI lists internship experience as a requirement in four New Grad postings, Cursor welcomes internships, and Perplexity accepts strong internships in place of a year of work, all read on October 14, 2026.

Can a high school diploma get you an AI technician job?

Some postings say so. Of 56 U.S. technician postings read on October 14, 2026, 17 mention a high school diploma, and 15 of those pair it with 1 to 3 years of hands-on work.

Should you apply if an entry-level job asks for 3 years?

Read the heading first. If the 3 years sit under nice to have, they are not a cutoff. If they sit under minimum requirements, count internships, military, trade and project time that matches the exact words before deciding.

Where does the 35 percent LinkedIn figure come from?

Many career sites say LinkedIn found that 35 percent of entry-level postings ask for years of experience. On October 14, 2026 we could not reach a LinkedIn page that states it, so we quote nothing from it and use only our own count.
