Buying a Humanoid Robot in 2026: What a Unitree R1 Really Costs, Retail vs Import

There is a question everyone asks the first time they see a humanoid robot at a trade show: “How much is that?” For years the answer never changed: “It’s not for sale.” Where a price tag should have hung, there was only a request-a-quote button — and the quote form usually wanted a company name.
Then, on the morning of August 8, 2026, I opened Korea’s robot storefronts one by one and found a page where the button had turned into a number. A 123 cm (4 ft) humanoid robot was listed at ₩11,990,000 (≈$8,600) with a credit-card checkout button, and the stock line read “small domestic inventory on hand.” The question of whether you can buy one is settled. The question that remains is what the right way to buy one is. So I measured everything with the same ruler: the official price, the domestic retail price, and the full landed cost of importing one yourself, taxes included. Figures verified August 8, 2026; dollar figures in parentheses are approximate, converted at about ₩1,400 per dollar.
The short version: In Korea’s domestic market, the Unitree R1 is officially imported and sold to individuals at ₩11,990,000 (≈$8,600) for the AIR trim and ₩13,990,000 (≈$10,000) for BASIC. The same robots list at $4,900 and $5,900 on Unitree’s official store, so even after Korea’s 8% import duty and 10% VAT, self-importing runs about ₩8.22M (≈$5,900) and ₩9.89M (≈$7,100) — that is, ₩3.77M–₩4.10M (≈$2,700–$2,900) cheaper. But that difference is the price of an eight-month domestic warranty, customs handling, and fast delivery — and the import route carries a legal catch: under Korea’s radio law, a personally imported unit cannot be resold for one year. One more thing before any of the math matters: the AIR and BASIC trims cannot grasp objects, and you cannot load your own code on them. If you are imagining chores and errands, either trim will disappoint you completely.
1. What you can actually buy today, with a price showing
First, the fact check. I opened both channels known to carry humanoids in Korea.
MyRobotSolution, a B2B robot marketplace, lists twelve humanoid models — Unitree G1, AgiBot X2 Ultra, UBTECH Walker S2, Robotis AI Worker, Rainbow Robotics RB-Y1, LimX TRON 2, and more. All twelve show “request a quote” where a price should be. That is a channel for companies and research institutes.
GAZESHOP, an online retailer, shows won prices with working checkout buttons. These were the live listings that morning:

The first thing to read in that table is not the lowest price — it is the stock column. The most capable model, the G1, is sold out, and the only bipedal humanoids you can actually pay for right now are the two R1 trims. So the realistic meaning of “you can buy a humanoid now” is closer to “you can buy an R1 now.”
2. Clear this up first: the “R1” in the news is two different machines
Search for the price and the numbers scatter. One article says ₩4.29M (≈$3,100), another says ₩8.15M (≈$5,800), and the store says ₩13.99M. None of them is wrong — they describe different products, or different conversion paths. Confuse them and you buy the wrong machine.

In plain terms: if a “₩4.29M humanoid” headline made you picture a robot that walks, stop. That is the entry price of a legless dual-arm research platform. If you want the walking R1, the floor is 39,999 CNY (≈₩7.73M) at China list, or ₩11.99M through official Korean retail.
One more decoding note. The ₩8.15M figure in some coverage is 39,999 CNY converted first to dollars ($5,900) and then to won — a two-hop conversion that inflates the number by more than ₩400,000 compared with converting CNY to won directly (₩7.73M). Don’t treat it as a real purchase price.
3. AIR vs BASIC vs EDU: what the ₩2M step buys — and what neither trim can do
This is the table that matters most. The trims look alike by name, and this is where people buy the cheap one and discover the feature they wanted does not exist at all. It cross-checks Unitree’s official spec sheet against the trim-by-trim comparison by the review outlet RoboZaps.

The ₩2,000,000 (≈$1,400) step from AIR to BASIC buys six joints, a stereo camera, and a microphone array. If the robot will stand at an event and walk, AIR is enough. If you plan scenes where it meets people’s eyes and talks, BASIC is the entry point. And if you want it to grip anything, or to run your code, neither is the answer — that starts at the EDU ($10,500).
4. Import vs domestic retail: the full tax math
Now the main event. The official price is $4,900; the Korean shelf price is ₩11,990,000. At the day’s verified rate (1 USD = ₩1,411.63), $4,900 is about ₩6.92M — so more than ₩5M sits on top. But that is not all margin. Taxes are in there.
The rules are fixed: goods over $150 are dutiable; the customs base is the goods price plus freight and insurance; robots carry an 8% duty; then 10% VAT applies to the subtotal. The table below is a minimum estimate that excludes freight and insurance — a real import costs more than this.

Two things the numbers say. First, even with every tax paid, importing is ₩3.77M–₩8.36M cheaper. The folk theory that “domestic prices are high because of tariffs” is only half right: duty plus VAT add about 19% to the base — the rest is distribution, warranty, and inventory cost.
Second, the absolute gap grows with price, but the ratio shrinks. Korean retail runs 46% over the import cost on the R1 AIR, and 37% on the G1. The pricier the model, the smaller the relative penalty for buying domestic.
What the ₩3.77M premium buys. Official domestic purchase includes: ① a free eight-month domestic warranty ② customs and certification handled for you ③ 3–7 day delivery ④ card payment plus consumer protection under local law. Note that Unitree’s official store lists all items as non-returnable — with a self-import, “try it and send it back” does not exist. The real decision is whether that safety net is worth ₩3.77M on a ₩10M machine.
5. If you do import one into Korea: five steps, in order
The math says importing is cheaper — here is what it actually takes, in sequence. Skip this, pay first, and the robot sits in customs.
- Step 1 — Get a personal customs clearance code. Free to issue from the Korea Customs Service site; have it ready before you pay overseas.
- Step 2 — File the radio-conformity exemption. The R1 carries Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, which puts it under the radio law. An individual importing for personal use is exempt for one unit per model — file the exemption request with a usage plan, a statement of purpose, and the invoice through the customs single-window system (UNIPASS).
- Step 3 — Budget the taxes before you order. Use the 8%-then-10% formula above, but recompute with international freight and insurance added to the customs base. A near-30 kg bulky crate does not fly cheap.
- Step 4 — Protect yourself against shipping damage. The product is non-returnable, so film the unboxing; if damage shows, stop opening and file with the carrier immediately.
- Step 5 — If you might resell it, wait a year. The easiest step to miss — details below.
The hidden constraint: a one-year resale ban. The conformity exemption is granted on the condition of personal use, so selling within one year of import violates the radio law. If the plan was “use it for a couple of events and flip it,” importing is the wrong route — the officially imported unit earns back its premium exactly there.
6. What the videos don’t show — read this before paying
In Unitree’s official videos the R1 does handstands and breakdances. The company says the footage is unedited, with no speed-ups and no CG, and the movements themselves are real. The problem is what the videos imply: those routines are not the robot deciding anything.
The review outlet Toborlife AI puts it flatly: unlike humanoids that lead with autonomy, the R1 is remote-operated — the striking demos are triggered by an operator, not chosen by the robot. RoboZaps’ trim review compresses the base trims to one line: cannot grasp, cannot load code, one hour per charge. In practice:
- It will not do housework. No cleaning or cooking automation ships with it. If a “home humanoid” search brought you here, lower the expectation sharply.
- It has no working hands. AIR and BASIC hands are fixed fists; it cannot carry a cup.
- It stops after about an hour. The G1 runs about two hours; the R1 about one. An event day means cycling several batteries.
- It sits outside the motion-app ecosystem. Unitree’s motion marketplace (UniStore) does not list the R1, so downloading new moves to extend it is limited.
- No returns. The official store’s policy is no returns, on all items.
- Noise and space. Putting 29 kg and 123 cm in motion indoors needs clearance where nobody gets hurt and floors that don’t slip. Full-body routines in a living room are not realistic.
None of this means the R1 is a bad product. It means the R1 is a low-cost platform that moves in human form — not a servant that does work. Accept that sentence and the purchase satisfies. Expect the other thing, and you will regret every won of the ten million.
7. So who should buy what
Exhibitions, events, storefront draw → R1 AIR (₩11.99M domestic, or ≈₩8.22M imported). If all you need is a human shape that walks and dances, AIR is enough — audiences can barely tell the waist joints and stereo camera are missing.
Education demos and video content → R1 BASIC (₩13.99M). If the robot must meet a person’s eyes and respond to a voice on camera, the stereo camera and 4-channel microphone are the minimum spec.
Research, papers, custom motion → R1 EDU and up ($10,500+), or a G1 if the budget allows. AIR and BASIC take no custom code; as research units they hit the wall in week one. For these, request quotes through the official channels — and note the G1 is currently sold out at retail.
If you wanted a robot for your home → it isn’t a humanoid. Coldly: the robot that actually does work in a home today is a robot vacuum, and for companionship a quadruped (Go2 AIR, ₩3.99M) is far more practical. A ₩11.99M robot that walks for an hour competes with a lot of better uses of the money.
One-line verdict. As of August 2026, buying a humanoid robot is genuinely possible, and the entry line is ₩11.99M (≈$8,600) domestic / ≈₩8.22M (≈$5,900) imported. But at this price a humanoid is a platform for showing, not a machine for working. If you cannot finish the sentence “I will have it do ___,” the most rational purchase today is none at all.
